2005:
The pacy Shaw was under the media microscope for much of the year,
but tagged Brisbane nemesis Jason Akermanis out of the game in round
16. Tried hard all the way through the year, and is looking towards
a huge 2005.
2004:
The son of former Collingwood skipper Ray Shaw, Rhyce was drafted
under the father-son rule in 1999.
He made his debut late in 2000 impressing with his speed and flair.
He also scored two goals in his second match against the Crows. After
playing the opening match of 2001, Shaw was banished to the reserves
for making costly mistakes and wasn’t seen for the rest of the
season.
In 2002, Shaw was not sighted in the senior team as the Pies made
a charge to the Grand Final.
2003 was a make or brake season for Shaw and he took it with both
hands. Impressing all with his pace from defence, Shaw nailed down
a spot on the back flank for most of the year. Shaw also impressed
Collingwood fans, by waring the initials BR on the back of his jumper,
as a mark of respect for ailing club champion Bob Rose, who would
pass away later in the season.
After a great Preliminary Final against Port, Shaw was primed for
the Grand Final, however, it was a disaster. Shaw fumbled, slipped,
missed targets and dropped marks and the Lions ran all over the Pies
to win y 50 points.
Shaw was the subject of much criticism early in 2004, with claims
he’d never be good at AFL level again after a dismal performance
in round one against Richmond.
But Shaw made it back to the seniors midway through the year, being
played as a tagger and quelling Eagles star Chris Judd. Shaw again
made headlines when his uncle Tony Shaw suggested on radio 3AW that
Rhyce would be better off leaving the club. |
