Collingwood’s
Forgotten ‘forties - by Mountains Magpie

The
1940s are quite often overlooked by Collingwood’s fans and
with good reason. This was the only decade in which Collingwood
failed to make the grand final.
In
1939, Collingwood finished runners-up for the third consecutive
year after claiming back-to back premierships in 1935 and 1936.
As our history has displayed, this sort of sustained success inevitably
has it’s downside with a lean period for the club in the
succeeding years. For example, it was nine years after the Hafey

and white, success and despair. By 1937, it had won 11 premierships.

football has a fairytale it is how a club that emerged from the
swamp and shanties of an inner suburb 109 years ago transformed
itself into a proud powerhouse of the game. It does not matter
whether you support Collingwood or not, the facts show that the
Pies have occupied a remarkable niche in football since we formally
became a nation in 1901. More...
