Could do worse. He's a decent bloke.
I'm curious about the "last" reference. Would they be appointing him for life or has Labor got plans to become a republic soon that I missed? ![Confused](images/smiles/icon_confused.gif) _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

ALP election policy was to hold a plebiscite (non-binding vote) in its first term to gauge whether or not there was popular support for a republic. If the plebiscite returns a yes vote, the work will then start on what model of republic will be put to referendum.
Beazley would be a good choice but I doubt Rudd will have the nuts to appoint him. I might be wrong but I think he will be more likely to appoint a non-partisan figure to avoid scaring the horses this early in his term. |

Thanks Nomad, I wasn't aware of that proposed plebiscite.
Hope it gets up and that we avoid the circus we had last time. I like the idea of being a reblic, but really don't like the idea of having a popularly elected high exposure president. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Quote: | PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd has ruled out appointing a former politician as Australia's next governor-general. |
Quote: | "When we turn our minds to this, the next governor-general of Australia will not be a former or serving politician, conservative or Labor," Mr Rudd said in Charleville, Queensland.

Exactly. I don't see why we need anyone higher than the PM. All it does is create an undemocratic institution (as it is now and would be if the ruling party nominated a President) or diverts attention away from the real issues in a populist American-style presidential race.
Just rewrite the constitution eliminating the GG and just have the powers given to mandatory referendums in the cases where they might be used. _________________ I would be ashamed to admit that I had risen from the ranks. When I rise it will be with the ranks... - Eugene Debs |
