Very disappointed with the Geelong press conference after all of that. Scott was gracious and generous. Not what I had hoped for, at all. |

So no silent mouth agape left-right head swivels, eyes bulging in disbelief, with both palms raised towards the ceiling? _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

Here's Fox Sports' ratings for the Geelong players:
Quote: | 1. Rhys Stanley
Had a great battle with Toby Nankervis in the ruck. Had the advantage in the air early, but it seems the Tigers big man had Stanley covered around the ground. 5
2. Zach Tuohy
Roamed between the arcs and even pushed up to stoppages to win clearances. But overall didn’t have a huge influence on the game. 4
3. Brandan Parfitt
Appeared to hurt his thumb early in the game and at times appeared to favour it. Laid seven tackles and applied good defensive pressure, but didn’t have the same impact offensively. Was one of his side’s lowest possession winners. 4
4. Gary Ablett
Just wasn’t his night. The footy gods appeared to deliver a devastating blow when the Little Master suffered an early shoulder injury. However he quickly remerged later in the quarter and returned to the field, although he did seem to try as hard he didn’t put his shoulder through too much duress. Had a couple of classy moments to set up goals for his teammates, but didn’t have the same impact for disposals he had in previous finals. Exits the game as the greatest player of the modern era. 3
7. Harry Taylor
Went straight to Tom Lynch and kept him to one touch in the first half and one goal for the whole game. Every time the ball went in their direction, Taylor seemed to win out. Geelong great Jimmy Bartel told 3AW Football: “Harry Taylor is just so good at knocking his arms at the right time and shifting his body underneath the footy. You never feel stable in a marking contest with him.” 7
8. Jake Kolodjashnij
Rotated through a variety of Richmond forwards throughout the game. Didn’t have a huge impact on proceedings. 4
14. Joel Selwood
Continued to will his team all night. Had seven touches and three clearances in the first term and was one 0f his side’s best ball-winners. Still has plenty left in the tank. 6
22. Mitch Duncan
Came into the game as one of the league’s most in-form players — and carried that into the Grand Final. Showed off his elite kicking early, especially with his awesome set-shot goal in the first term. Led all-comers at three quarter-time with 21 disposals and finished with a team-high 25 touches. 8
23. Gary Rohan
Seven disposals in 2014, five in 2016 and five in 2020 — Grand Finals just haven’t been his stage. Picked up by Dylan Grimes and was blanketed all night. 2
24. Jed Bews
Showed some dash off half-back throughout the game. Had a terrific season to cement his spot in the best 22. 5
25. Lachie Henderson
Was given the job on Jack Riewoldt and kept him to one touch in the first half. But gave away a free kick to Riewoldt at the start of the third term, allowing the Tigers veteran to kick a much-needed goal. The Tigers forwarded ended up with another two for the night. 5
26. Tom Hawkins
Not Tom’s night. Noah Balta went straight to him. Missed an early set-shot then nailed one in the second term to get his confidence up, but then shanked a snap attempt in the third and dropped an early chest mark in the fourth quarter. Finished with 1.2 from 10 touches and three marks. 3
27. Sam Menegola
Showed outstanding composure early in the game then kicked a crucial goal in the second term. Then delivered an outstanding long-range set-shot goal in the fourth term to give his side some late hope. Just the 13 touches but never stopped working throughout the night. 6
29. Cam Guthrie
When his star teammates couldn’t buy a goal in the early stages, he delivered Geelong’s first goal with a stunning, long-range set-shot goal. Had seven disposals and five clearances along in the first term but went statless in the second and fourth quarters. 5
32. Gryan Miers
Manned up by Liam Baker and made a shocking call in the second quarter to play on when he had a chance to kick a set-shot, leading to a shanked snap. However he was involved in several Cats scoring chains and got his hands on the ball. Kicked an inspirational goal against the grain and laid a big tackle to win a holding the ball free kick in the third term. 5
35. Patrick Dangerfield
Not the best time to produce your quietest game, disposal-wise, for 2020. But how much is the coaches’ box to blame? Went to the forward line at the first centre bounce. Had a big second term with one goal from five touches. But as the Tigers surged in the third term, he was kept inside the forward 50 — and had just one touch. Then started the fourth term in the centre square and had an impact in an early clearance, but finished with 12 touches — his worst return for the season. AFL legend Leigh Matthews told 3AW Football: “Dangerfield, it just hasn‘t worked for him tonight.” 3
37. Sam Simpson
Should be super proud of his debut Grand Final performance. Impressed early with his hardness at the contest, with a game-high seven contested possessions at half-time. Then showed tremendous courage late in the final term when he went back with the flight of the ball and was knocked out by friendly fire. 6
38. Jack Henry
Took an outstanding intercept mark in the third term running back with the flight at full pace. One of the Cats’ best interceptors for the night. 6
40. Luke Dahlhaus
Had a quiet first half, but going in the third term with six disposals, a couple of inside 50s and a crucial smother. Had a quiet last quarter though. 5
42. Mark O’Connor
Was big in the third term with six touches. Seemed pretty composed with the ball — although he didn’t have much of it — and make some great defensive plays. 5
44. Tom Stewart
A wall in defence and provided ample stability, not only intercepting Richmond forward forays then gaining ample territory for the Cats the other way. Finished with 20 touches and a game-high 10 intercepts. 7
46. Mark Blicavs
Started on a wing next to Marlion Pickett and pinch-hit through the ruck. Was serviceable, but didn’t have the biggest impact on the game. 5 |

Memo to Collingwood's football department: it shows how much damage you can do by trading in the wrong sort of players. They rated Menegola a 6, Stanley a 5 (which was, IMO, overly generous - he spudded it up like a St Kilda player in a Grand Final), Dahlhaus and Henderson each also a 5, but Ablett got a 3, Tuohy a 4, Rohan a 2 and Dangerfield a 3. So, that's 8 imports and only 4 of them got a "pass" (and, not that it matters greatly, but I didn't rate the games of any of those 4 who "passed", either). |

I think I put this up last year.
Anyway, the biggest lesson from the whole final series was the way top sides don't go backwards.
Richmond just boot, handball, knock and slap the ball forward. They don't play a man back but try and swarm around the contest and move the ball quickly.
I don't think big forwards make a big difference... besides from mason cox against the eagles I don't think big forwards did much except bring the ball to the ground. We definitely need to go into this preseason with a different game plan that either incorporates the movement of the ball forward at all times or some plan that counterbalances it. |

It's a bad, bad day.
Hopefully Penrith can brighten it up a little for me tonight!
I had to contend with my cousin who wrote 2017, 2019 & 2020 on his FB wall & appeared on my feed.
I responded with 2018 & how Mason Cox saved us from their 4-peat therefore keeping our record in tact.
So much so that RICH enjoyed taking the big Americans shalong deep as they bent over.

The game to be the best you need to play the hot potato game move the ball forward any which way. No real skill in disposal or disposal amount as long as the ball goes forward.
These days its a pin ball and a hot potato. |

Yes, this is the Richmond way. Your players don’t need to be particularly skilful, and it negates any strengths that an opposition may have in contested marks or intercept marking. Just get the ball forward any way you can then apply pressure in forward 50. Wait for mistakes from the opp, or benefit from frees that come your way from holding the ball etc
Unfortunately, this approach combined with the horrible congestion around the ball means a further degradation of the game itself. Less kicks (other than off the ground), less marks. More tap ons, toe pokes, punch forwards.
If all teams adopt the practice our game will be even less of the great game it once was. _________________ Four legged animals good, two legged animals better |

Night GF rated well because 2 Vic teams and the only way most of their supporters could watch was TV.
As usual AFL dazzled by the pretty lights at night. _________________ If you are foolish enough to be contented, don't show it, but just grumble with the rest. - Jerome K Jerome |

To be honest I feel richmond have now revolutionised the way the game is to be played to be the best you really need to play like richmond play I feel this year has put a stamp on the game this is the new norm for Australian rules footy AFL style. |
