I certainly did, nearly fell out of my chair when we resigned both of them |
This.
I wasn't happy that we retained them. Thought it was time for both of them to move on at the end of last year. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023 | |

Likewise, I can go dig up the post...i think I said something along the lines of "the age demographic is looking very skewed with these guys staying on the list for another year, all are near 30 or over what
Can they really contribute?" _________________ "To know nothing of events before your birth, is to forever remain a child" - Cicero (Roman Lawyer/Senator) 46 BCE. |

but to the thread ..what is most annoying, not that we didn't get Jake...OK you win some you lose some. No club recruiters have a crystal ball...and let's face facts with the quality of ball delivery from out midfield do we really think Jake would have been able to kick this many goals playing for Collingwood?? Lol never.
What is very annoying is that our club has not even tried to take a punt on a key forward. It just been rinse and repeat with our same setup. _________________ "To know nothing of events before your birth, is to forever remain a child" - Cicero (Roman Lawyer/Senator) 46 BCE. |

That pretty much sums it up for me too. We tend to stick the “ next best player “ philosophy at the national draft, rather than invest in any potential project talls. We do have talls on our rookie list but there’s usually a good reason why they slip through to the rookie draft in the first place. ( obviously with a few notable exceptions )
My other criticism is that we seem to be reluctant to use the VFL as a feeder comp for any of our selections. Miochek aside, which is even more odd cause he’s been a good result for us. The Hawks have used the VFL with a number of very good returns over the years. It’s hardly trailblazing territory.
Recruiting is a hit and miss industry, we’re not the only ones to get it wrong but it’s very difficult to lay claim to the next big tall talent if you don’t pick anyone over 6’ 1” in the first place. |

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and, although Riccardi would have been a more than handy addition to the playing roster, consider the following from the 2001 'Super Draft'
We picked Richard Cole at 11. Instead of Cole, we could have picked any one of these players: Dal Santo (Pick 15), James Kelly (11), Steve Johnson (24) Sam Mitchell (36), Leigh Montagna (37), Paul Medhurst (56).
Conversely, Daniel Hunt- Sydney- (Pick 53), Ben Robbins- Kangaroos- (54), Brent Colbert- Western Bulldogs- (57) were all taken with picks just before Collingwood took Dane Swan with Pick 58.
Amazingly- these players slipped through to the Rookie Draft that followed the National Draft- we could have had any of the following- Ben Rutten, Aaron Sandilands, Nathan Bock, Mark Jamar or Andrew Carazzo.
Instead, at that Rookie Draft, we took a bloke from Essendon's VFL team called James Podsiadly. He failed to play a senior game at the Pies, but played in a premiership winning team against us for the cats in 2011.
I'll stop there because it is doing my head in. Life is not an exact science but there is one thing I am certain of- I want our boys to belt the tripe out of Carlton today.

What sort of players do the Hawks take from the VFL?
We did have that period where we picked up Sam Dwyer and K. Martin. I wonder why Dwyer fell out of favour with the coach. |

Well, there's no chance of getting him as recruiter, anyway, because the Hawks gave him a promotion a long time ago, so he won't be recruiting for anyone. (The AFL industry seems to think a job like Walsh's is much more important than recruiting.) |

I don’t want to do your head in any more, but that traded down number 11 pick was because Malthouse wanted Chad Morrison from the WCE. If we had kept our original number 7 pick we could have had Jordan Lewis. |

North are going to finish very low, so does that mean we're going to get a very early round three pick? Number 40 or something? _________________ I would be ashamed to admit that I had risen from the ranks. When I rise it will be with the ranks... - Eugene Debs |

Word was we were going to select Riccardi with pick 51 but we traded that pick on draft night for pick 55 which we used on Ruscoe and GWS used 51 on Riccardi instead. |
