"City is 25 points ahead of United, Liverpool 24. Both have coherent recruitment strategies, unified visions of what they want to be. Both play a modern, thrilling style of soccer, tactically intelligent but visually compelling. United matched City here, for 45 minutes or so, but only through gritting its teeth and straining its sinews; it could not live with the club that has existed, as the saying goes, forever in its shadow for sheer class.
There is another team that went through all this, that wallowed in its history as the world moved on, that stuck to outdated traditions and refused to change, no matter how mountainous the evidence that it needed to. Manchester United is a long way from matching Liverpool’s 29 years without a title. But it is just as far from ending its own six-year wait."

After Liverpool's 5-0 pounding of Huddersfield, their goal difference is surprisingly close to Man. City's, but the points make that unlikely to be a factor. They need a huge upset so Man. City drops 2 or 3 points. |

The Premier League’s Parity Problem
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/26/sports/premier-league-liverpool-manchester-city.html
"A few weeks before Leicester City clinched its improbable, unforgettable Premier League title in the spring of 2016, an executive from one of English soccer’s dominant Big Six clubs was in a basement conference room at a four-star London hotel, explaining that it must not be allowed to happen again.
...
Over the subsequent seasons, the Big Six — Manchester United and Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea — have done all they can to make sure that does not, and could not, happen. The gap between English soccer’s elite and the rest has been turned into a chasm.
Between them, the six have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on players. Each club has broken its transfer record at least once. Their rosters now include the most expensive goalkeeper and defender in the world, and the most expensive player ever signed by an English club.
Five of the teams have changed their manager, some more than once, appointing a cadre of the finest coaches of their generation, men who have won multiple championships in Spain, Italy, Germany and France, as well as a glut of Champions League and Europa League crowns. The one that has not, Tottenham, has built a stadium described as the most advanced in the sport, at a cost of £1 billion ($1.3 billion).
...
Between them, according to figures compiled by the data provider Opta Sports, the Premier League’s top two account for 17.9 percent of all the points won in England’s top flight this season. That is a level of dominance that has not been seen since the late 1890s.
...
England’s elite teams no longer need to perform especially well to overpower most of their domestic opponents; they can all simultaneously be within touching distance of crisis and the Champions League.
...
It does not seem to be putting off fans; attendance rates remain consistently high.
...
Perhaps, in hindsight, this season will not seem quite so exceptional. Perhaps this is just the new normal, the Premier League as the Big Six want it to be, whether anyone else likes it or not." |

FiveThirtyEight gives Burnley a tiny 7% chance of beating Man. City, but a slightly larger 14% chance of holding the draw. Chelsea is given a 41% chance of beating Man. United, a 34% chance of a loss and a 26% chance of drawing. (They don't show where the rounding error went. ) That's one of several good examples of "all three results are possible". (Brighton-Newcastle is 37/32/30.)
Update: Brighton & Newcastle duly played a 1-1 draw, with 9 shots each, 49%-51% possession, & 82%-81% pass accuracy. |

HT Burnley 0-0 Man. City
Man. City dominating possession (69%) & pass accuracy (86%-62%), but with only 2 out of 7 shots on target.
Google says the live win probability is now Man. City 71%, draw 22%, Burnley 7%.
Media: "City have flattered to deceive, with Burnley keeping them at bay and squandering perhaps the best chance of the first 47 minutes. Chris Wood had seconds to react after being played through on goal but Ederson stormed out to smother the ball." |

FT Burnley 0-1 Manchester City.
"Manchester City are heading back top of the table – thanks to Agüero’s strike, that cannoned all 29.59 millimetres over the line."
On such fine margins are championships decided. |

R. Bailey (on the Aguero goal 29.51 millimetres over the line) :
"This isn’t the only moment in which an inch or less may have tipped the scales of the title race. During City’s 2-1 win over the Reds in January — a game that remains Jurgen Klopp’s only league defeat of the season — John Stones cleared the ball off the line by just 11 millimeters. ... Once again, if Stones had been a fraction of a second too late, City would likely be in second place.
...
If the season ended today, Liverpool’s tally of 91 points and +64 goal difference would be good enough to win all but five of the Premier League’s 27 seasons. And if they finish the campaign with 97 points, their tally would be good enough to win every single Premier League campaign before 2017-18. They would have finished 22 points ahead of the Manchester United team that took the glory in 1996-97."

That's arguably a 5-point swing in 4cm. |
