Post subject: Last chance Cafe: Broomhead and Crocker | |
|
Seeing Chris Mayne resurrect his career on the wing after James Aish injured his knee against the Tigers in round 6 last year got me thinking. Undoubtedly Tim Broomhead has had undeniable talent with good foot skills, footy nous and reasonable pace. But a body that has been pounded with both collision and straining body injuries.
Ben Crocker has been tried and failed as a forward due to inaccurate kicking, inability to accumulate sufficient possession totals and an inbetween height of 188cm that makes him too small for key position and not agile enough for a crumbing spot.
So what's their destiny? Well they have 17 matches and hopefully finals before they face the list management wrath of Ned Guy saying "yeah or nay" for 2020. Being in the last year of their contracts, it's shape up or ship off time.
Tim Broomhead: at a club with an abundance of midfielders, small forwards and winger types, Tim should walk into Jared Rivers office and ask for a Back Pocket possession immediately. As discussed, we lack foot speed and exiting prowess out of defence and with Quaynor developing in the Reserves, Aish lacking foot speed and disposal polish (similar to Appleby), Tim could make a material difference to our prospects here.
Ben Crocker: I've never been a fan. However, I was surprised to read a couple of weeks ago he collected 38 possessions from a Wing position. With Mayne out for a prolonged period of time, the Wing may represent the last opportunity Ben has to make the grade.
Most people on Nick's have probably written these guys off. Personally I would love to see Broomhead (pick 20 in 2012 Draft) get a run at it and salvage his career. Either that or we keep him as our Clay Beams type on our list to retain Grundy

Broomhead was very good in the VFL. I do think his inclusion will help lift the team when it happens.
But both have a mountain to climb. But if Mayne can do it..... _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

We are watching different games (so too are the coaching staff). The idea that Broomhead will replace Aish at this point is foolhardy at best. <snip – let's all try to be a little more civil, please. Thanks, David for BBMods.> _________________ Ohhh, the Premiership's a cakewalk ....... |

Not sure you can compare Broomy and Aish.
Aish this season has shown real guts and rarely gets beaten 1 x 1. He has really improved and it's good to see him playing decent footy. His disposal can let him down, but all of our backs under pressure have made mistakes this season. Maynard, Langdon, Howe and Moore have all turned it over at some stage.
Broomy is an interesting one. I think he is too light bodied to compete as a back pocket. I couldn't see him competing 1x1 against his direct opponent and breaking even - refer to game against Dogs when Aish was one out and got the spoil.
He isn't good enough at this stage to come into the team. |

I think that’s a good summary of Broomhead as a B P.
I reckon he has the speed and skill back there but they would isolate him one out against any mature bodied forward pocket or resting big mid whenever the opposition coach felt the need to.
Broomhead has been through a lot during his time at Collingwood. He deserves a break ( excuse pun ) but I’m not sure it will be in the B P. |
