No, that's what you are talking about

Yeah because Reid and Shaz are so durable

Why can't the answer be none of the above _________________ https://forever.collingwoodfc.com.au/sav-sinks-the-dockers/

I can read.
Dunno what the point of having a thread is if you are going to talk about some other thing.
(Never, not in my whole life, have I ever posted anything off-topic. Not even once. Well, OK, once. All right, twice. A few times. Probably less than six. Certainly less than a dozen. Less than 50 for definite. Less than a thousand for sure. Probably.) _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

It all went off the rails when some guy said we didn't need a key defender because we have a bunch of guys who've never been on the field at the same time...
If you don't want a million dollar man like May then get a $400k guy and front end his contract if needed to fulfill our salary cap/meet the conditions of the OP _________________ https://forever.collingwoodfc.com.au/sav-sinks-the-dockers/ |

After last nights display from Goldsack and Langdon it reitarate's my point that we dont need a key defender.
We are a good, mobile, defensive unit.
Why where we in for Lynch and Beams if Key-Defender is so important? _________________ Gavin Brown.. Collingwood lifting..Right on the boundary line, back to Milane likewise... DAICOS nearly runs out of room........ GOAL |

Because nobody stepped up in the forward line with De-Goey starting Mid.
This further justifies the importance of looking for a dangerous forward instead of a key-defender.
Our so-called undermanned defence did very well. West coast is 11 from 11 when they have Kennedy&Darling both in. They ripped Richmond apart by over 40 points. Yet, they barely scraped in against us. And they had the umpires.
Dont worry about defense. Worry about our forward line _________________ Gavin Brown.. Collingwood lifting..Right on the boundary line, back to Milane likewise... DAICOS nearly runs out of room........ GOAL |

With a key back such as May you can use guys like Goldy, Howe and Moore as swingmen if things aren't quite working out forward _________________ Formally frankiboy and FrankieGoesToCollingwood. |

I agree, but it seem we missed out on the key forward so I have no issues chasing May due to age and injury concerns over Dunn, Goldsack, Reid, Moore & Shaz.
However, a key forward is critical and unless we develop one in the next 1-2 years then we should throw everything at Cameron when he becomes a free agent.
Meanwhile the need for another gun mid is also becoming apparent with Pendles showing signs of a decline (no I'm not saying he's finished) whilst Sidey is not getting any younger either.
We are progressing well but need to make some wise decisions over the next 2 years, no more Mayne & Wells rubbish. |

Go on, go back to the top of the thread and actually read the question. We are talking about recruiting one star player on top dollars. We can pick up a competent full back for spare change. Not only can, have done, and there is no reason at all why we can't do it again. (If we even need one at all - having Moore, Reid, Dunn, and Berg go out all at the same time was very bad luck and almost certainly won't happen two years in a row.)
The question as asked is what STAR do we recruit. And the answer has to be a midfielder - 'coz A-Grade mids are hard to find, and there is no such thing as too many of them. Competent full backs are not something you have to pay a million bucks for. |
Tannin
Dunn (note the spelling)- has been good and may be available by the start of the season but is coming toward the end of his career.
Moore - may not be at the club next season and may not be on the park too much if he is
Reid- is basically finished physically and can't be relied upon any longer
We will likely have Will Kelly (193cm) come year end. But he will be undersized for a couple of years.
Most good teams start with Defence as a strength. It can be team defence, but is assisted with good tall backs.
Richmond has a star in Rance, Grimes (193cm) is excellent too and Astbury (195cm) also very good. Why wouldn't we wish to replicate this, knowing that we already can stand toe to toe with their midfield? This is their strength and where most of their attack starts.
West Coast have shown that McGovern (190cm but 96kg), a big bodied Hurn (186cm supporting) and Tom Barrass (194cm)
Giants have Davis (197cm) as their lynchpin and a developing Finlayson at 196cm.
May (193cm, 101kg and importantly is about 26yo) is quick re closing speed and a good kick. He'd be a great acquisition for the $800k per season mark in my opinion.
Our team ranked No 3 for points scored and No 8 for points against this season. As you also note, we really have a surplus of midfielders given half of our forwards are mids and wingers if required (De Goey, WHE, Thomas and Stephenson in time)
Oh and think of some of the great teams of the past few years
Mew and Langford (Hawks)
Michael and Leppitsch (Lions)
Scarlett & Taylor & Lonergan (Cats)
even Reid and Brown in 2010/2011 for us
They've all had multiple strong tall backmen. _________________ One team, one dream - the Pies and this year's premiership |

De Goey... and Stevo and Thomas too right? 3 of our 4 leading goalkickers, none of them started in the forward line. And our leading goalkicker is struggling lately. So not much of a surprise there

This is a player we'd happily pay well over $1M a year. The question is why? These guys just don't win finals anymore. If they do well in a final it's usually due to midfield dominance in which case you'd have won the game without an overpriced key forward. Make sure you have the best midfield, anything else is secondary. I think we still have some improvement to be made to our midfield and wasting all our capital on a KPP would be a mistake. |
