Collingwood should start marketing here - the market’s primed !!
Both the shabby teeth and the dreadful cuisine ended, thankfully, in the 1980s. _________________ Two more flags before I die! |

It’s an old American stereotype about British people. Not sure how much basis in reality it has, except perhaps for the fact that Americans tend to be more obsessed with physical perfection and thus would be more likely to fork out for braces (plus plastic surgery, breast augmentation, arse implants, etc...)
Personally, I’m proud to have average (i.e. not perfectly straight) teeth. It’s not a moral failing to look normal! _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Watch some brit TV... you'll notice it now, far from a stereotype... it's real!

Lived in Australia, lived in Britain, no difference in the dentistry being sported except it’s cheaper to get your fangs fixed up in the UK.
The stereotype comes from the 1940s and 1950s, and it was true enough then. Britain was heavily indebted and bankrupt, rationing was still in place (it did not end til 1954, which meant many things had been rationed for 14 years), and the Labour government had brought in socialised dentistry - free, but unconcerned with cosmetics. The price of two ghastly wars in thirty years could be seen in drab clothes, bad food, thin bodies and shabby teeth. _________________ Two more flags before I die! |

Whereas now, here in Australia, we have to pay an arm and a leg for any dental work, necessary and cosmetic alike. I know which system I’d prefer! _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Neither system works well, actually. NHS dentistry is pretty Soviet - poor quality with long waiting times. But private dentistry in the UK, while not cheap, is not quite as financially painful as it seems in Australia, though my points of comparison are slim. I know that a root canal filling plus a post and crown recently cost me about $1700 in Oxford, where a friend in Australia paid a lot more (I think about 2600) for something similar. A growing minority of people in the UK fly to places like Hungary or Turkey to get such things done. I guess there is an ASEAN version of that.
The price Britain (ie the British people) paid for fighting on the defensive side of two world wars in thirty years is not well understood. _________________ Two more flags before I die! |

Medical tourism, right? I find that whole idea kind of terrifying – in any case, I don’t have the money for a ticket to Thailand or the guts to submit to minor surgery in a developing country where the quality of equipment and training may be less than comforting.
I am well overdue for a check-up, though – guess I’ll just have to bite the toothbrush and do it, find out what's wrong and wait for the four-digit bill to fix it. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |
