Hayden back on top of batting rankings
Lynn McConnell
October 14, 2003
Not only did Matthew Hayden's world record score of 380 deny Brian Lara ownership of the record, it also removed him from No 1 placing on the PwC ratings of Test batsmen. It is not Hayden's first appearance at the head of the rankings, that occurred a year ago against Pakistan.
He had not been out of the top three since then. But the Perth innings could still not displace Lara from the ranking as the scorer of the highest-rated innings. That is still regarded as his 213 at Kingston in 1999, while VVS Laxman's 281 at Kolkata in 2001, is also ahead of him as both were scored against strong Australian attacks. The fact that Hayden scored his runs against the weak Zimbabwe bowling downgrades his performance according to the ratings.
TEN TOP RATED TEST INNINGS SINCE 1990 ACCORDING TO PwC:
213 Brian Lara v Australia, Kingston, 1999
281 VVS Laxman v Australia, Kolkata 2001
154* Graham Gooch v West Indies, Headingley 1991
329 Inzamam-ul-Haq v NZ, Lahore 2002
380 Matthew Hayden v Zim, Perth 2003
188* Saeed Anwar v Ind, Kolkata 1999
333 Graham Gooch v Ind, Lord's 1990
375 Brian Lara v England, St John's 1994
226 Gordon Greenidge v Aus, Bridgetown 1991
274* Stephen Fleming v SL, Colombo 2003 _________________ Donny.

Pollock tops world ratings
From correspondents in London
October 29, 2003
SOUTH AFRICAN paceman Shaun Pollock has regained top spot in the PricewaterhouseCoopers weekly Test bowling ratings.
Australia's Glenn McGrath (third), Jason Gillespie (fifth) and leg-spinner Stuart MacGill (10th) – all absent from the tri-series tour of India through injury – feature in the top 10.
Pollock took 6-78 in the first innings and 1-27 in the second during the drawn second Test with Pakistan in Faisalabad.
England's Steve Harmison climbed to 19th after his nine wickets in the first Test with Bangladesh. Harmison has been ruled out of the second Test with a back injury.
Australian opener Matthew Hayden, who hit a world record individual Test score of 380 against Zimbabwe early this month, heads the batting ratings with compatriots Ricky Ponting (third) and Adam Gilchrist (fifth).
Victorious England captain Michael Vaughan moved back into the top 10 after hitting an unbeaten 81 in the second innings of the first Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka.
