For those at a loose end on Good Friday, might I suggest the following, bearing in mind that the Magpies are playing the following day
Parramatta v Canterbury rugby league 8pm or thereabouts on channel 9 and Foxtel
Slim pickings from English premier league as it is international friendly season...
Chile v Argentina world qualifying match 10.30am and 4pm on ESPN
Various world cup qualifiers through the day on Fox...
And a replay of the Richmond v Carlton match...yeah well... |

Bluesfest Friday schedule includes the National, Grace Potter, Graham Nash, Archie Roach, Steve Earle, and of course Chain. Along with a few other artists, should keep me amused. |

No newspapers, no action and no football!
Again the useless AFL have decided to forgo a great opportunity
to have a footy match on this day. I could understand Christmas day.. that is the biggest family day of the year. But Good Friday...
hell, it isn't even a day when people go out for a barbie. It is a nothing day.
I'm an Atheist and there are millions of people in Australia who are not Christian. So I don't give a rats about a so called holy day.
It has been 6 months since the proper footy finished and here is a great opportunity and what do we get.... nuthin, nuthin, nothing!!!! |
Spot on! |
As a fellow atheist I enjoy my four day weekend, so if for one of those four days they want to close everything down, stop the papers, stop the footy and eat fish so be it. I respectfully accept the terms of the arrangement. |
Not me. These are public holidays now, not religious days (we are a secular society, no?). The fact that they still coincide with religious days is of little importance. We need these days throughout the year and if we removed the religious days (I'd not be against it), they'd need to be replaced with something else. Just as no one has to watch the Melbourne Cup on cup day, no one should be forced into any kind of religious observance on a public holiday which coincides with a religious day.
There is no good reason not be playing footy on Good Friday. I doubt even the churches would strongly object, it's not as if Melbourne is completely cut off from the rest of the world and that events/sports/entertainment from pretty much anywhere else does not filter in. It's a complete anachronism made the more stark when you consider that America plays major sport both on Good Friday and Christmas Day. A far more religious country with a far stronger church lobby. Complete nonsense.
Missing footy for a day is no big deal, but nonsense should be made more sensible whenever possible. |
I wish I was forced to watch the Melbourne cup on cup day after a sleep in and some fizzy bubbly, but unfortunately Melbourne cup day isn't a national public holiday.
Its all good and well inky, but like I said, be it nonsense or not ......doesn't bother me having to survive one day without footy. _________________ No Pressure, No Diamonds

The fact that everything shuts down for Good Friday is, IMO, ridiculous.
Shops are open and footy is played on other public holidays, this whole shut everything for good Friday is a 1950's anachronism that shits me. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

It's Every Sunday where I live in fundaberg. Perhaps this is why it doesn't bother me so much. _________________ No Pressure, No Diamonds

It is a little odd that there is no footy on Good Friday and yet on Easter Sunday footy is on? I would have thought the resurrection of Jesus was as important at least as his death?
I am all for the holiday or holy day… however I think footy should be on, as far as I am aware there is no christian rule about fasting from footy or not playing footy on good friday…
They should still raise money for children's hospital etc and do it at the games as well - I can't imagine people would be less charitable because they are playing AFL on Good Friday! _________________ Love us or Hate us... we are Collingwood - you can't ignore the Mighty Magpies!!! |

Good Friday is one of 2 1/2 restricted trading days in Victoria under the public holidays legislation. The others are Christmas day and from 12:01 am to 1pm on ANZAC day.
The other 3 Easter public holidays and all the other holidays are non restricted.
Pretty much everyone celebrates Christmas whether they're religious or not but only a very small minority actually celebrate Good Friday, it has no meaning. FFS Easter Sunday is easter egg day but Good Friday is just a day when you get thrown back to the 50's for no valid reason to the vast majority. Scrap the restrictions. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |
