Post subject: Key Stats to R.8 Team Rankings | |
|
Thought I'd put together our key stats after R.8. I don't have access to Champion Data so I have to look around various sites.
Rank 1: Contested Possessions
Rank 2: Inside 50s
Rank 2: Marks inside 50
Rank 5: Contested Marks
Rank 5: Goal Kicking Accuracy
Rank 7: Tackles
Rank 8: Clearances
Rank 10: Goals from Inside 50s
Rank 13: Uncontested Possessions
Rank 14: Disposal Efficiency (15th Adel, 16th Carl, 17th Melb, 18th GCS)
We are obviously winning the ball well enough around the ground in contested situations, which Bucks would love and we are giving our forwards plenty of chances with the number of Inside 50s. We are marking well from our Inside 50s too but we goal only 23% of the time. WC goal 30% of the time with Freo on 28% and North 26%.
What does this tell us? Obviously we are not efficient once inside 50. We are either turning it over too often inside 50 or our entries inside 50 are too shallow; our forwards mark the ball too far out or on severe angles, or both.
There are obviously other interpretations from these figures so I'd be keen to hear how others see this.
The really worrying stat is our efficiency ranking once we actually win the ball: 14th. Seems we have improved only slightly in this area from 2014. I shudder to think how this stat might look once we have played a few good teams. _________________ After the epic draw comes the decisive knockout!

Ranking 1 for contested possessions is a great stat, they're having a real good go at it. I think our disposals are slowly improving, plenty of upside in our young group. Very encouraging. Great research by the way mate👍 _________________ Don't count the days, make the days count. |

We need to improve our clearance stat especially at the centre bounce if we are to compete against the big boys.
Clearances and momentum swings against generally go hand in hand and puts your defence under so much pressure.
We saw that in the second quarter against the Gold Coast. _________________ He's mad. He's bad. He's MaynHARD! |

Love your work Neil.
The " new " buzz " stat in footy is a teams ability to create repeat entries inside 50.
It simply shows a teams preparedness to retain possession again ( or not ) after the opposition has cleared the ball from their defensive 50.
Nobody has done it better than Hawthorn and the reason its so important is because most teams set up with a 7 man defence ( particularly against good teams ) this usually renders the first entry a non event because the defenders outnumber the forwards.
By being strong in this stat, it just means that your structures, zoning and personnal are better at winning the ball again and then being better prepared to take advantage of the repeat entry back into their own forward 50.
The seven man defense is also why the contested marks inside your own 50 is such an incredibly important stat too. It really is one of the few times when a forward doesnt have opposition pressure bearing down on him while he moves the ball forward or has a shot on goal.
As they say in the classics " the numbers dont lie " |

We are 13th for centre clearances and 8th for clearances.
Young rucks and missing Sidey and Levi has hurt us in the middle, yet around the ground where we can get more players involved we aren't getting smashed as much. |

Yeah not surprising we are 13th in that area.
We really need to improve it to get to the next level. _________________ He's mad. He's bad. He's MaynHARD! |

Remember our stats will be pumped up from playing bottom 4.
But still some good stats. And many are important ones to win. |

It shows we win our fair share of the ball. I think there was a distinct change in plan in the gold coast game to hold onto the ball more, our possession count and uncontested possession count was well above average. I think that has been the killer for us and what we do when we don't have the ball especially against the middle to high ranked teams.
I liked the fact that we played a bit of tempo footy when they got a little bit of a run on and just slowed the game a little by holding on to the ball during that time.
What are the stats for uncontested possession differential? _________________ Human behavioural studies suggest people who use a lot of swear words tend to be more honest & trustworthy. |

As Mark Twain once said "lies, damn lies and statistics".
Perhaps our poor efficiency score reflects our number one ranking for contested possessions. Maybe a lot of our disposals are delivered under fierce pressure in packs etc, where we have little time to deliver accurately? whereas, teams with a lot of uncontested possessions tend to dispose of the ball under little pressure at all. Then again, maybe I haven't got a clue?

Being ranked 13th for centre clearances correlates with teams kicking a run of goals against us. The easiest goal is most often from a centre bounce and we have to improve in this area. No doubt having Sidebottom and Greenwood back will improve that ranking but having those young rucks means we have to be patient.
Interesting too that our conversion is much better. My gut feel is that we aren't bringing in the ball so wide and more shots are from in front. But no doubt our efficiency inside fifty suffers when Cloke is too often the target and the spare defender can spoil and clear the ball. I like our forward line when Clokey roams and we have multiple leading targets. Hopefully Faz can finally establish himself and Jamie is now back in form. And then there is Reid? Hmmm... _________________ Magpies love pies(Lol) |

Thanks Neil A. One stat that seems to have gained currency this year is "metres gained": barely heard of it before this year. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |
