Our great white hope in the ruck started off like a house on fire in his debut season but for mine hasnt progressed anywhere near expected.

He makes really poor decisions and no longer leaps at centre bounces. He also seems to have lost his aggression. He cant take a mark to save himself.

Is a ruck coach employed by the club?
Is it between his ears?
Is he just not that good?

Do we consider trading him??!!

I have my concerns also. and like you say what has happened to his progression to date. when Grundy arrived he flew out of the blocks and DTM suggested we sign him on a ten year contract and I felt that was a strong consideration for all concerned. atm he seems uncoordinated and unathletic but I will put that down to youth but it doesn't explain why he's gone backwards.

his reaction time seems to be a bit off. often he will want to do something which appears sensible but by the time he gets around to doing it he causes a turnover.

Gee. That's not my perception of Grundy. I think Grundy is developing very well, given his age and number of games. What other ruckman the same age as Grundy is performing any better?

He's only played 39 games and according to Footywire the majority of his career high stats have happened this year which suggests he's improving.

But with Big Cox coming along so well in the twos and Darcy Moore looking like a competent future back up ruckman I'm finally open to the idea of trading either Witts or Grundy if we get a decent offer.

I have been worried about Grundy for a while now.
And yes I know it may take another year or 2 for the big guy to develop fully.
But, there are certain attributes where no progress has been made:
1. His forward work is poor - 7 goals this year from 17 matches, he doesn't lead well, he can't take a pack mark and he is slow getting ball to boot and slow in general.
His ruck work isn't bad but he often leaps too soon, he is not a tap ruckman and he has been beaten for certain periods of time in the ruck this year.
I also think that his natural aggression has gone missing since he burst on the scene in 2013.
His work around the ground is still good but this was the area where he looked good in 2013 and it is still the only area of his game that still looks good. Nothing else has changed.
Still early days but things don't look as bright as in 2013.

let's not get too carried away with cox. even allowing for a couple of solid performances he still has some way to go. i wouldn't be trading either grundy or witts.

Been thinking about this as well, seems like both our "young gun" ruckmen cannot take a pack mark & dominate around the centre bounce & ground. The ruck (see Nic Nat, Goldstein & Freo giant to name a few) shows how important it is to get first use of the ball and lessen the pressure off the backline.

It also begs the question - who the hell is our ruck coach these days??????

Nic Nat is just friggin amazing. Given his body shape I don't think he will last long in the game. But at the moment he is fantastic to watch!

You're not giving him much of a chance. I mean he's 21 and we've seen what he can do at his best. He's out-of-form sure, but you can't turn over the list whenever a player has a string of average games. I don't think he's played THAT badly, just a little down from where he was. His groundwork and second efforts are pretty good. Todd Goldstein is 27 and it's only been in the last couple of years that he's become one of the premier ruckmen in the league. Doesn't happen overnight.

What you say is completely true but it is the lack of ANY advancement in a number of key areas is what worries me.

Lack of advancement? He's having career high averages in Disposals, hitouts, marks, goals, and tackles this year. I know that supercoach scores can be decieving too, but fwiw, he's averaging over 90 points per game this year.

I'm honestly not sure what more we could possibly expect from a 21 year old ruckman...

Neither Witts or Grundy are good marks. This is a major flaw.
