Post subject: Cost of Living ComparisonReply with quote

Ok with the recent news of how the AFL is going to look into the concessions given to the swans and brissie, i.e salary cap (at last, although it'll probably be like the ACCC "We're looking into it"), it's got me thinking how there is always this claim/fact about the cost of living in Sydney compared to everywhere else in Australia.

So with that in mind, let's get people from all over the country to reply with what it costs to live in their city, comparing basic items. Let's use Capitals or major regional centres to have at least some basis (sorry to those in country areas). Use normal everyday figures, not redspot specials.

Home Loan Interest Rates are standard across the whole country (are they not?).

For Melbourne:
Unleaded Fuel: 86 - 96 cents per L. (midweek, weekends)
Bread (650g)/Milk (2L-4% fat): $3 each
Lunch Sandwich and drink: $8
Monthly Train Ticket: $135 (from ~20-30km from CBD)
Parking CBD: $12/day or $25 (early bird rates or otherwise all day)
(Include other everyday items as you like)

I don't know if I agree with the average mortgage repayment factor. Don't you buy what you can afford, regardless of where you live? Lets say, if the average price of a house in Sydney is $350K and in Melbourne it's $300K, you live in Sydney and can only afford $300K, don't you buy a house for $300K. So what's the difference. Of course if you live in a rural town and you can afford to pay $300K but you only have to pay $200K, then you have a reduced cost of living. If you can't afford to buy you rent. As far as I know people will buy what they can afford (barely) and spend to their limit regardless of where they live, so what is the difference. Of course you might say that to buy at $300K in Syndey you might have to live further from the CBD, thereby increasing your costs of travel.
So does it really only come down to what it costs to put a roof over your head?

(I know this is simplistic, but you don't visit the doctor each week for example, and ignore kids school fees, and how much it costs to go to the footy )

It'd be interesting of even reading your perceptions.

the difference is that a 300k house in sydney would be 5 hours from civilisation....thus spending more on fuel etc etc

I appreciate what you're saying PP2003, but as I said if you can only afford to pay $300K then that's it isn't it? So then if not you rent. You can buy a renovators delight or the Taj Mahal but if you can't afford it then that's it. You're mortgage repayments will be the same wherever you live. So therefore is it just the extra cost of travel?

Oh here we go again.....Christ you Mexicans are all the same.
Sydney has the better climate,we have the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and the BEST footy ground in the land.....What does Mexico have, the 'G'...ah what else??????
The cost of housing here is better than Melbourne, and you dont have to travel miles to get it.Geeze when was the last time that you morons brought a house.
I know of a couple in Ashfield that sold their home unit for 295K and then went to Strathfield, some 10 -15klm away and paid $400K for a home.
My home 20 years ago we paid $65K for it,now I can sell it for $300K.
Go rural and you can buy a home on land for $70K.We are looking at this now.
Any way the Greater Sydney area stretches further that the Greater Melbourne,.so get off your high horses.
We pay $1:20 for a loaf of bread....from a Fresh bread shop,we pay 92.9 cpl for unleaded,we pay 45.9cpl for LPG,so where do you guys get off.
If you want the truth Melbourne is more of a 'shithole' than Sydney. At least you dont have to make a right hand turn from the Left hand lanes any where in Sydney?????

Pete, What The?

So basically what you're saying is that the cost of housing doesn't really enter into it. I started this thread to determine (good enough for me) if the AFL are justified in their cost of living claim for giving the sydney swans more cap. Stop trying to read between the lines, there's nothing there.

I live in Sydney and have lived in Melbourne and other major cities in the world. If I had the choice (work-wise) I would move back to Melbourne immediately.

Harbour Bridge, Bondi etc do have an appeal if you are a tourist or you like to get intimate with backpackers.
Sportswise Sydney is nomansland. No passion. As for "We can't run websites" Stadium - no atmosphere, apart from the fact that the ground is pretty small for footy.

Face it, rent/house prices and Public Transport are at least 10% more for the equivalent standard/distance form the city.

Public Transport is shit - try to go out at night, the only option getting back is a dedicted driver or $40 for a cab.

My best made moved to Melbourne from overseas and never wants to go back there or live anywhere else.

Everyone to their own liking, no point going off at people bacause they prefer to live in a different place.

I guess I forgot to say anything positive about Sydney. My wife's a local, reason enough for me to stay here.

This is not I repeat NOT a Melbourne vs Sydney Thread. Maybes some people on the West coast can be a bit more objective.

(Anyone know the record for the most posts in your own topic?)

ummmmmm peter, whats up your clacker? he is not saying melb is better than syd ner ner ner, he is asking a valid question, and I for one am interested in finding out the difference of the cost of living in melb v syd v perth v adelaide v bris, I don't live nor have ever lived in any of those cities.
maybe you should take a breath and have a think b4 you go off the handle.

Slightly off topic, the afl claim the extra money for bris is for them to retain players, with all the extra money they have they can afford to hold onto three brownlow medalist, has any other club in the history of the game had three brownlow medalist playing for them at the same time???

1 doz eggs =
1k of tomatoes =
stuff like that.

Mad your answer,

Technically, Collingwood had three Brownlow Medallists in their 1930 Grand Final side. Harry Collier was retrospectively awarded a Brownlow in 1989. Albert Collier won in 1929 and Syd Coventry won in 1927. Another First for the Pies, don't believe what they say that brissy was the first to do it.

If you people in Sydney, dont like it....then go back to melbourne....we are better off without you.
Actually of all the cities that I have been to Adelaide and Perth are the most friendliest and the most beautiful and the cheapest,Brissi, the motorist are maniacs and Hobart....well that is a city all on its own.
One thing that I ask and that is Pies for Premiers 2003 where do you get your information from concerning a home for 33k being 5 hours from civilization. If you told me that out here in Liverpool,I would 'punch you in the mouth'
Get your facts right before mating stupid statements. You can purchase a home for under 300K any where in Sydney and it would be better than some of the hovels that you people call homes.I live in a 3 bedroom brick home on a 736M2 block of land with a inground saltwater pool in the back yard and three bird averies....are you trying to tell me that its a 'shit hole'
Think before you put both feet into your mouth will you....by the way MY home is valued at $285K and I live in the city of Liverpool.....if you know where that it????
Jesus I think that this BB is degenerating into CRAP and most of its coming from idiots that havent a clue.
Anthony C no the cost of living in Sydney has nothing to do with what the AFL think, they are trying to make all things equal regardless of what state people/players live in.

You right there Pete?

It's a very one sided fight you're having.

Perhaps a cup of tea and a Bex and good lie down wouldn't go astray.

Sydney what a joke that city is......Oh lets go to the casino......how embarrassing is that casino!!!! The nightlife in Sydney is no where near as good as Melbournes.

BTW it must be painful for you if you wanted to come and watch Collingwood play. Afterall our home is Melbourne!!!!!!
