anyone got some tissues for pete?? Dont understand the concept of a hook turn??? Not surprising....and by the way the city of melbourne actually is one of the biggest in the world....syd does not even compare......I'm sure you have a great house pete....but be honest Liverpool is not one of the greatest suburbs.....in fact I heard in rates as one of the worst.....nevertheless Im sure your happy....
apart from housing/rentals the cost of items and day to day goodws would be similiar....like you said anthonyc if you cant afford more then 300k....find a place that you can afford...you just wont get the same sort of value.....but again the same can be said of Melb v perth etc etc.....you would get some awesome places on the beachfront in perth and not take 55 yrs to pay it off like in melb.....
Ps Melbourne was voted AGAIN...the worlds most liveable city....wonder why?? All we have is the G????

for gawd's sake, DON'T continue it tomorrow.
please try and stick to the topic. this isn't a sydney vs. melbourne slanging match, it's meant to be a thread about footballers' living costs, as originally outlined in AnthonyC's well-researched post.
though i gotta admit i was intrigued by the fact that Gunga goes for 250 bucks/oz in the West! classic stuff Assasin!

as a sydney -ite liverpool is 1 hour from the cbd and is a not very nice
cost of living theory sure it costs alot more to live in sydney so l can understand that point of view
but it is a lot cheaper in brisvegas so actually the lions should have a lower salary cap and also the majority of thier players are qld-ers so really they have an even greater advantage
eagles and freo crows and port also have an advantage as real estate and rent is alot cheaper in those cities compared to melbourne
THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE !!!! |

Assasin you're kidding me. A 2L milk carton sells for $1 in WA.
That's 1/3 of the price here, that is unbelievable if that's right.

Pete,
Chill out and relax. At no point did the origional post degrade anything in Sydney, it was merely done to get some level of perspective for the poster and others who may not have an idea of the differences.
I think it is univesally known that Sydney's Housing/land/rental prices are higher than Melbourne and that generally ups the cost of living.
Maybe Anthony made a mistake with his guesses on housing prices and quality in Sydney but when I read it I felt that he was guesstimating figures just to create an example. You then tore into him like there was no tomorrow and for no real reason and I actually think you should apologise.
Just a point though, I think you will find that Melbourne suburbia covers a larger area than Sydneys does, by quite a considerable margin. Thats not a criticism of Melbourne or Sydney, its just a fact.
For all those who want to compare or find out more, try the Aust Bureau of Stats Website - www.abs.gov.au
Peter, you input here is always good and I hope that you were just having a bad day.

Now, as somene who, as a child, spent several years in Liverpool (and I don't mean the Beatles famous abode) may I just say what a shit-hole it was! And having visited there in 2000, nothings changed!
Now, on to serious things. Sydney will always cost more than Melbourne whaen it comes to real estate. If you look at an arial photo of Melbourne, you will see that "flat" land streches all the way to Seymour. If you look at an arial photo of Sydney you will se the Blue Mountains trapping Sydney betweeen it and the sea. So, land is harder to come by in Sydney, supply and demand.
Now, apart from the every day cost of items, and let me tell you that my petrol cost me $1.05.9 per litre this morning, I shall compare the cities for Peters sake.
Remember Peter, I do not live in either city.
I visit both places and can only come to the conclusion that Melbourne is the better place to live if I had to.
Melbourne is a much more cosmopolitan place, the side walk cafes, the art, the casino, the concert venues, the sporting facilities, the theatre, the public transport (hell your bus drivers even tried to kill madeliene West) all top Sydneys efforts. But of course I am not a surfer and can recognise the appeal of surf beaches in Sydney.
My only real point for such a comparision is state one thing. Both cities require that you live within 5 kms of the centre to truly reap the benifits. Unfortunately, no matter which city you choose, this is very costly.

I rent a two bedroom flat in North Fitzroy ... Australia's most liveable suburb ... with one other person ... for $170 ... that's $85 each.
What would you get in a comparable suburb in Sydney for $170 ... a single rented room in a dosshouse ... with a bucket to be sick in.
You can have it, gringo.

I live less than 10kms from the CBd, it takes me 40 mins to walk to the MCG, I live 2 minutes walk from Lygon Street (yes, enemy territory I know) which is awesome, and trams are a great idea, lots of them like Malbourne have, not just a few like other cities. I think melbourne rocks.
Biased view? - OF COURSE IT IS!! please, everyone likes their home town - that's why they live there!! I can't beleive this post, started in the best of intentions, has disintergrated to this level.
There is no need for another intercity rivalry post - I'm glad that you sydneysiders don't like melbourne, cause I gotta tell you there ain't room for too many more people down here too quickly, and the same goes for sydney. so it's a GOOD THING we don't all want to live together.
please, just agree to disagree.

"Get your facts right before mating stupid statements. You can purchase a home for under 300K any where in Sydney and it would be better than some of the hovels that you people call homes"
Correct me if I'm wrong here Peter, but there doesn't seem to be a plethora of fact accompanying your thoughts on the matter, unless I'm mistaking demented ranting as fact. Now, I haven't lived in Sydney since 1991, where I had a lovely house in Clifton Gardens, down by the water for a year. Very nice, ferry to work, most pleasant, harbourside BBQ's, lovely! However, I'd include Clifton Gardens in the set "anywhere in Sydney", and if you can find me a home there for under $300,000 that's slightly bigger than a bread box, you have my power of attorney to make an immediate offer. Email me the details!
"Think before you put both feet into your mouth will you...."
mmmmmm sound advice, now, who posted this again?
"I think that this BB is degenerating into CRAP and most of its coming from idiots that havent a clue."
Wow, judging by your efforts on this thread, one isn't exactly raising the standard now, are we?
Onto the subject, cost of living, and its effect on salary cap.
I kind of recall that the extra cap space for Brisbane and Sydney was put in place for these reasons:
1. Cost of relocation for players.
2. Higher living costs (esp Sydney)
3. To give the clubs a bit of extra financial clout to 'convince' players to sign for them.
I'd reckon if 2. were valid, WA teams should have a much lower cap, as cost of living in Perth is less than that of Sydney/Melb, for example. This happening? No. Therefore, one must conclude the extra cap is unfair.
1. and 3. were probably there as players didn't want to leave 'home', so to speak. I'd say the combination of draft and time has resulted in players not expecting to go to the club of there choice anymore, it's a kind of 'culture' change. Nowadays it's the norm to go to whoever picks you up, and players know it. Extra inducement to make them 'sign up' ain't required. (I may get a certain ex no 19 from Coll mentioned here, but its exception, not norm.)
Now, your question Anthony, does it all boil down to real estate prices?
To a large extent, I'd say yes, but let's not forget these guys are on probably above average moolah.
