Who needs a family unit. How about a society where neighbours, teachers, colleagues, etc. all share the load of the child-raising process.
Really, why should we rejoice in the fact that we're raised to treat one group of people (our family) better than anyone else? I'd rather feel that way about everyone, or at least, a lot more people than is currently encouraged.

It's an interesting concept Omar, but has there been any society in human history where the family unit hasn't been present?
I don't know, the sort of thing you're talking about might well be better for the development of kids, but it is a radical idea and it would be hard to discuss until we had seen it in practise.

Meerkats are also known to share their burrow with the yellow mongoose and ground squirrel, species with which they do not compete for resources. If they are unlucky, sometimes they share their burrow with snakes.
Meerkats are the first non-human mammal species seen actively teaching their young. Young of most species learn solely by observing adults. For example, meerkat adults teach their pups how to eat a venomous scorpion: they will remove the stinger and help the pup learn how to handle the creature. |
