lol Dave.
Stories like this make you think though... is it possible that this could mean the future extinction of the family unit? And if so, what does it mean for society? _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Who needs a family unit. How about a society where neighbours, teachers, colleagues, etc. all share the load of the child-raising process.
Really, why should we rejoice in the fact that we're raised to treat one group of people (our family) better than anyone else? I'd rather feel that way about everyone, or at least, a lot more people than is currently encouraged. _________________ I would be ashamed to admit that I had risen from the ranks. It's an interesting concept Omar, but has there been any society in human history where the family unit hasn't been present?
I don't know, the sort of thing you're talking about might well be better for the development of kids, but it is a radical idea and it would be hard to discuss until we had seen it in practise. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Quote: | In hunter-gatherer and horticultural societies women were able to fulfil their role as producers as well as playing their role in reproduction. Heavy ploughing and the use of domesticated animals changed this. A pregnant woman or one with small children couldn’t easily carry out these tasks and they increasingly fell under the remit of men.
Agriculture also demanded labourers. Where hunter-gatherer societies had tended to limit the number of children so as not to deplete resources, agriculture could be more productive with more children needed to help in the fields. So as men became exclusively responsible for production, women saw their primary role shift to that of child-bearer.
Greater productivity benefited every member of the group. But once the surplus fell into the control of a minority, inequalities and classes began to form.
................
The private family became the mechanism by which private wealth could be passed on from one generation to the next. This entailed a final degradation of women’s influence. Men, because of their economic role, became heads of the household, passing their wealth on to their sons.
.................
So the family was a consequence of the development of class - not an age-old “natural” hierarchy. |

we have much to learn from the Meerkats
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meerkat Quote: |
Meerkats demonstrate altruistic behavior within their colonies; one or more meerkats stand sentry (lookout) while others are foraging or playing, to warn them of approaching dangers. When a predator is spotted, the meerkat performing as sentry gives a warning bark, and other members of the gang will run and hide in one of the many bolt holes they have spread across their territory. The sentry meerkat is the first to reappear from the burrow and search for predators, constantly barking to keep the others underground. If there is no threat, the sentry meerkat stops signaling and the others feel safe to emerge.
Meerkats also babysit the young in the group. Females that have never produced offspring of their own often lactate to feed the alpha pair's young, while the alpha female is away with the rest of the group. They also protect the young from threats, often endangering their own lives. On warning of danger, the babysitter takes the young underground to safety and is prepared to defend them if the danger follows. If retreating underground is not possible, she collects all young together and lies on top of them.
Meerkats are also known to share their burrow with the yellow mongoose and ground squirrel, species with which they do not compete for resources. If they are unlucky, sometimes they share their burrow with snakes.
Meerkats are the first non-human mammal species seen actively teaching their young. Young of most species learn solely by observing adults. For example, meerkat adults teach their pups how to eat a venomous scorpion: they will remove the stinger and help the pup learn how to handle the creature. |
