McGuire forced to wind himself up under anti-trust laws
by STAFF REPORTERS

Eddie McGuire has been forced to personally wind himself up as tough anti-trust lawyers targeted his sporting omni-presence.

The host of the simply brilliant original Channel Nine concept program, “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”, McGuire came under pressure when his various roles in sports broadcasting and administration were dissected.

Eddie had no comment last night, other to confirm that he would be winding himself up early next week and would cease to exist from that point. His lawyers haven’t given up hope that they can get anti-trust campaigners to agree to a Microsoft type deal where Eddie can still operate, as long as he is broken into smaller parts.

As it stands, McGuire is deeply involved in the looming AFL TV rights battle, as well as hosting Nine’s “The Footy Show”, producing football programs through his personal company McGuire Media, writing for newspapers, appearing on radio, acting as a director of an internet development company, holding the contract to paint the ceilings of the new AFL headquarters at Docklands stadium, cleaning AFL chief Wayne Jackson’s car and developing his own prototype series of “Hey, it’s Eddie!” personal football cards.

Anti-trust lawyers have been circling McGuire for months but finally moved in when the full extent of his role in club administration became obvious. McGuire is publicly recognised as the President of Collingwood Football Club, but has now also been revealed to be the President of Fremantle, Port Power, the West Coast Eagles and St Kilda.

“Nobody had previously linked his name to all these clubs because nobody cared who was the president of those teams, apart from the Magpies,” a lawyer explained.

AFL officials became concerned when examining preliminary documents relating to the new broadcast rights deal, due to begin for the 2002 season.

“It became clear to us that 10 per cent of a deal here, 12 per cent of a deal there, a minor shareholding in this company over here and a major stake in that company over there meant McGuire would own 94 per cent of AFL football club shares, broadcast rights and merchandise deals from the end of the 2001 season,” said a League spokesperson.

The other 6 per cent would have belonged to Eddie’s brother, Frank.
