AN AMERICAN spy satellite that is due to fall out of the sky within weeks has an orbit plane that takes it through Australian skies.

US officials said they had no control over the satellite, which is the size of a small bus, and had no idea where any debris might land.

The Federal Government agency Emergency Management Australia said it had a number of contingency plans in place if the craft, which contains dangerous materials, failed to fully burn on re-entry and hit Australia.

Emergency Management Australia spokesman Alistair Wilson said the plans involved "liaising with the emergency services in different states that might be affected and notifying them so they can be ready on the ground".

The plan was developed in 2001 when there was a remote possibility of debris from the Mir space station falling on Australia.

Anntonette Joseph, president of the National Space Society of Australia, a club for space enthusiasts, said the likelihood of the satellite hitting Australia was tiny. But scientists will not be able to determine the exact landing area until a day or two before re-entry, expected late this month or early in March.

"It's expected to land somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, and that's a big space," Ms Joseph said. "Mind you, Skylab was supposed to land in the ocean." The 78-tonne US space station's crash to earth in 1979 spread debris across the south of Western Australia. The Shire of Esperance slapped the US Government with a $400 fine for littering.

The US refuses to confirm that the failing satellite is the military spy satellite USA 193, owned by America's National Reconnaissance Office.

When do you think artificial intelligence will replace lawyers? Are you free? Oh, US refuses to confirm that the failing satellite is.
