And the environment and animals could survive in vastly bigger pockets without a reliance on technology if humans were wiped out, but that's not the way I'd prefer to see it happen

You didn't really address my comments Morrigu. Why don't animal rights organisations go to anti-war and anti-imperialism rallies? Don't they see human beings as animals? Are animals more worthy of being saved than working-class people in the 3rd world?

I really don't understand their position, can you explain?

No I can speak only for myself

I belong to and support several environmental and animal rights organisations none particularly radical and am also a past volunteer with Médecins Sans Frontières and teach healthcare on a volunteer basis.

We have no children and so are in the position of being able to assist through World Vision - it's a drop in the ocean - BUT it has increased my awareness of the need for co-existence between man, the environment and animals.

Take for example parts of Africa and the approach adopted with the poaching issue - the local community must be able to earn enough to sustain life - poaching (even if they get a pittance so that some rich &^*# with the cash can have ivory steak knive handles Evil or Very Mad )

Enter education and jobs as rangers and the local community can earn enough to feed their families and live with the animals and environment. I'm sure you will understand the great connection indigenous communities have to the environment and all life forms

I don't believe that animals are "more worthy" of being saved - for me it is not a question of some ideological argument of whose "rights" are greater - pain and suffering are pain and suffering and there needs to be a willingness to co-exist! To believe otherwise or be forced to choose is IMO insane

On our last trip we visited an elephant sanctuary - a place where elephants that were creating havoc in villages as a result of loss of their habitat were relocated and cared for by locals - wonderful for the villages wonderful for the locals employed and wonderful for the elephants!!

And yes David I was a hypocrite - I was at this time wasting significant amounts of cash sponsoring pampered AFL footballers - money better spent sponsoring the elephants and work of the local community

Hmmm that was a very long post Embarassed
