An example (and probably my favourite) of this collection of interesting work by a friend of mine:

Quote:
Made in Australia by a middle aged refugee in a garaged at the back of her three bedroom house in suburbia.

Do Not Tumble Dry as the thread at each hem, cuff and join was mindlessly cut by the seamstress's three children, each of whom would fume at the wasted labour when your shirt is shrunk, unwearable and discarded.

Hand Wash Only as she does for the delicate garments her children wears, even though this topples her over after sewing for 10 hours a day.

100% cotton, as 100% as the love she has for her children – the same love that drives her to work herself into a sad lonely insanity in a garage at the back of her three bedroom house in suburbia.

Check it out.

Mate, I'm not a massive fan of poetry, but what i read on there is just dead set depressing.

I can relate somewhat to the outworker making clothes in the garage. I heard a union orgainser speak at a HR conference about the plight of outworkers and that was the only time in the last 10 years I've thought a union had a legitimate worthwhile task to perform.

Yea, her childhood wasn't delightful by the sounds of it.

She tells me that there are hundreds of mothers and families who did (and still do) similar stuff in garages around Melbourne. Horrible situation hey.

They get paid jack sh1t, work their butts off in a garage on shitty old sewing machines, making clothes for effectively $2 an item to get sold in Target etc for $35 or more.

FFS. go work in a factory or stack shelves at safeway or something. What they do is the closest thing we have in this country to slave labour. For a kid, that would be the modern day equivilent of the scottish coal mines.

As a person who worked in the textiles industry and dealt with numerous outworkers on a daily basis, you wouldn't believe how true the poem is.

The only inaccuracy is the 10 hours per day. Sadly, it was far worse than that for them.

The demands that my former employer was able to put on them, was a discrace. And sadly, there was no protection for them which ensured the "F@#K them, find another outworker" response whenever they complained.

What specifically brings the 10 hours per day to mind?
