Apprentice burned in alleged prank
An apprentice motor mechanic has suffered burns in an alleged workplace prank in which a solvent got on his clothing and was ignited.
WorkSafe is investigating the incident at a diesel engine repair business in Hallam, in Melbourne's south-east on Wednesday morning.
WorkSafe spokesman Michael Birt said the victim, a youth aged under 18, is in a stable condition at The Alfred hospital but may need surgery.
"We're at an early stage in our inquiries, but it's believed a solvent has gotten on to him and has been ignited," Mr Birt said.
The injured boy had recently started work at the business, Mr Birt said.
Police have been informed of the incident.

$10,000 to $15,000 each for the offenders, I'm tipping.
WorkSafe really go after these types of incidents _________________ The one man in the world, who never believes he is mad, is the madman. |

My son's doing an apprenticeship ATM. If something like that happened to him, Worksafe would be the least of their problems. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Light hearted pranks on apprentices can be fun and harmless, such as the age old "Could you grab us a left handed screwdriver please". Still gets them
Obviously, some take it too far. I know of a similar story where a friend of a friend's boy was doing a panel beating apprenticeship.
While sitting in a toilet cubicle doing what you do, some fool decided to give him a little fright by squirting some paint thinners under the door and setting it alight. Little did he know, the thinners had splashed onto the boys trousers, which, needless to say, were down at his ankles. So you could imagine, the poor kid would've been dancing around, trying to get his gear off, while being engulfed by flames, inside a locked cubicle. Ended up with 3rd degree burns all over his body.
That was probably 20 years ago, can't recall what happened to the offender, the boy obviously was unable to complete his apprenticeship and lucky to be alive. Sadly, his father was also a panel beater who ran his own business and sent his son off to get some experience from another workshop.
Incredible to see that sort of crap still goes on _________________ Formally frankiboy and FrankieGoesToCollingwood. |

Would that mean his father knew he was useless and would rather have another panel shop train him, instead of training him in the family business? _________________ Whale

BoxHill I believe and it was around the early 90's
Much more serious one in Seaford in about 1997 and one in Pakenham around the same time.
Both boys seriously injured. _________________ The one man in the world, who never believes he is mad, is the madman. |

Yeh, probably right Frank.
Dale, don't know how you'd draw that conclusion, were you taking the piss?
I'd say it was very astute thinking by the old man to send off his son to another successful business as to perhaps bring back new ideas and help broaden the boy's own knowledge.
Fat lot of good it did in the end, I know, but you catch my drift don't you? _________________ Formally frankiboy and FrankieGoesToCollingwood. |

Yep. I agree.
They don't get to sit in an office all day, don't get to go to uni, they pick and choose what jobs they do and if they're any good at what they do, they absolutely mint it.

Bricklayers get $120K + a year if they want to work that hard.

That's actually not a lot of return for breaking your back. I've got a lot of admiration for brickies and concreters. Extremely labor intensive and unless you're running your own crew it's a tough way to earn a buck. _________________ Formally frankiboy and FrankieGoesToCollingwood. |
