Why do you play cricket?

This summer The Age is running a series of articles that delve into the reasons why people play cricket on the weekends.

These articles, predominantly written by Peter Hanlon, are a very good read bringing good humour in enlightening us all why.

I played a couple of seasons in New Zealand with some mates in a social team. The biggest decision to make was whether to put down your ciggie or beer when the ball came near you in the field.

Like all at Seddon [Melbourne], he is proud of how they go about it. A young man with an intellectual disability came to the club one year, so they worked with him at training until confident he wouldn't get hurt, and gave him a run in the fourths. Another kid, from a disadvantaged family, started hanging around, so they took him in and gave him a game. Caring about winning is one thing, caring full-stop is something else.

"This is a community organisation," Rooney says.

"We're responsible for the people who are here and their behaviour.

"The moment we neglect our community obligations is the moment we're in trouble."

I used to play socially with the mates, used to be the thing to do in school at least in the small area we had at my first school. Me and a friend who was from Thailand (his name was Boon.) became the new batting sensation known as David Boon...what? Oh well umm...I was bowling he was batting I was wearing some button I was given and missed a catch...

A first was pissed off at the dropped catch of course...:p I never wore a button playing cricket again...
