Quote:
Complaint filed against judge who slammed ASIO

Earlier this month, ASIO director-general Paul O'Sullivan complained that the ASIO agents had not had a chance to rebut the charges of criminal misconduct. In fact, the ASIO officers did have the opportunity to put their side of the story to Justice Adams. However, he found their testimony unconvincing and, at times, untruthful.

The officers had confronted Mr ul-Haque at Sydney's Blacktown station in 2003 and took him by car to a park where he was warned he could do things "the easy way or the hard way".

He was taken back to his house and interrogated until dawn in the presence of an AFP officer. The ASIO agents only had a search warrant, not one for questioning.

From the Age

In response to that biased piece of tripe purposely constructed in order to position readers to favour ASIO and the AFP:

Notice that they don't actually mention the human rights abuses till near the end of the article, and instead to decide to begin by giving authority to the complaint of the "top legal bureaucrat" and his "senior" colleagues. And the way first sentence claims that the case was "terror-related" when they were just indiscriminately fishing for some information. Notice also that the parts I've quoted above (the most meaty sections of the article) are buried halfway in.

Notice also the incredibly biased description of the decision; "which led to a terrorism case against Sydney medical student Izhar ul-Haque collapsing. A terrorism case collapsing? What case? If anything there's a case for the guy to charge ASIO with state-initiated civil harassment.

Remember, this is meant to be a semi-objective NEWS report...

Oh, and another thing, notice the damning quote buried in the second last paragraph"

ASIO wrote:
We are in the process of learning about what is required under the law

Couldn't any criminal being charged for the first time respond in the same way? What that actually means in this context is:

Quote:
We tried to do whatever it took to fabricate information for an older case that is running out of steam, but we were caught. We're sorry for being caught, and we're currently working out ways of a)undermining the judge and b) circumventing the laws more subtly

$£$%^%%$ smug pricks.

Who in their right (!) mind would still argue that the Age is left-wing in any broad, meaningful sense? It might be tolerant of (liberal) feminist ideas, and IS relatively supportive of Indigenous issues, but it is hardly a committed anti-authoritarian, anti-war, pro-liberty and pro-justice paper. And that's what being left-wing is all about.

Get questioned till dawn and its human rights abuse. Be a ten year old girl raped by animal dogs and its not worthy of serious punishment.

Go figure. Crying or Very sad

I wouldn't want to put these ASIO guys in jail either, if that clears it up for you.

That's a long, long bow you tried to draw there mate. To be honest, I'm not even sure what exactly your point is.

This is the trouble with the media... it's not so much what side of politics they're biased towards, as it happens on both sides - but these 'respectable' publications show their biases way too often.

Is it that hard to write an objective report? Emotive phrases (not something this article is necessarily guilty of, mind you) should simply be a big no-no, yet read the Sunday Herald Sun and you'd find a thousand of them.

This is why I never want to become a journalist... it sounds good in theory, but really it seems like such a petty, immoral little industry.

I'm not aware of any main stream media, that could be considered, to be left leaning.

ASIO is in existence to protect the 'establishment' and nothing more

Let's not kid ourselves about the media. At the end of the day the story they write and the perspective they use is entirely based on what will sell the most newspapers.
If being pro the defendant sells more then that's the story you get along with the innocent looking photograph to match. If being pro Police will sell more then you'll get that story and this time a sinister photograph of the defendant will accompany the story.
At the end of the day I guess i'm saying you just can't believe the greater portion of what is printed or stated by the media. I believe Choppa Reid said it best, and this definately relates to the media, "never let the truth get in the way of a good story".
