So it's worthwhile spending hundreds of dollars just to make kids happy? Bullsh!t. This goes back to what we were saying earlier about kids and mobile phones... The more expensive presents you buy for kids (and others), the more their expectations for more of the same next year go up, and the more pressure there is for others to do the same.
We never had much money growing up (not poor at all, but all our money went into paying for my private school  ... till we just couldn't afford it), and me and my sister would usually get to pick out one CD to buy and listen to in the car on all our trips. The main part of xmas was always just hanging out together as a family + with our army of cousins. And that only requires a massive cooking session and some snacks.
Not saying that is the only way to do it, but we were more than happy with that little gesture, and they didn't have to break the bank or more importantly continue and increase the cycle of consumerism.
Being anti-presents and bullsh!t consumerism doesn't mean you're anti xmas, anti-family, or anti-children. In fact, it's probably more healthy for kids to grow up without all the extra technological crap, both physically (obesity) and psychologically (more-more-more culture).

| Are you a student? What you said was either too complex or too simple for me. Is for others to do the same also expensive presents you buy for kids and others the their expectations for of the same next year go up and the pressure there? What kind of food do you like? Is that a fact. Try saying that with more or less context. |

Great post Omar, I totally agree.
My parents didn't celebrate Christmas for wacky christian fundamentalist reasons, but regardless, I don't think it's something I'll be participating in when/if I raise a family. Happiness shouldn't be measured by how much stuff you get.

chadstone was open for 36 hours straight which is just hideous in my book. christmas to me is not about microwaves or nintendo wiis.
it's a wonderful time to give thanks for the year that has been and to look forward to another one. iof you can spend that time with close friends and family that is a bonus.

christmas is about what you feel is what it's about. some think its the kids, others for religeous reasons, some for microwaves and nintendo's, some just for the holiday. we're all different therefore your views on what christmas is all about should not be frowned upon.
if you want to spend squillians to see the smiles on your kids faces, and you want to spend it at the shops who make squillians out of christmas - then SO BE IT!!!
enjoy what you enjoy about christmas and let us enjoy what we enjoy! you don't have to come to my place! enjoy your own!!!

I never understood the overspending me and my brother would get some stuff that was put on layby nothing expensive. My aunt bought my cousins these bikes with a battery in them for like $300 or so dollars that was for 2 plus the rest of their presents.
I know the real meaning of Christmas, I never really embraced it, which is pretty bad considering I am Catholic. When I grew out of the toys for christmas thing, and the stuff for Christmas I just sat back and watched the younger siblings enjoying opening the stuff they got for Christmas.
I always hated the "Naughty or nice" list story, though it wasn't as bad as getting the "You're going to hell if you sin!" bit that was drummed into my head when I went to Sunday school.
That shit freaked me out until I finally grew out of the whole religion thing, that's a story for a different time It used to annoy me when these brats I knew who were the most horrid people on earth would get all this fancy new stuff for Christmas and people who were better then them really didn't get much....
Not that it really mattered, my family didn't live in poverty we were never well off we survived, we still do survive we were never as bad off as some of my friends who didn't get much my neighbours were well off and were snobs my aunt (mums sister) is well off and she's just a bitch.
But we still enjoyed Christmas a family dinner, and later on a drive this time of year reminds me of the party we had with my aunt who is battling breast cancer, we found an invite to the old party while moving.
