Hobart businessman John White is due to be sentenced today over a monopoly deal he signed as director of the Tasmanian Compliance Corporation.
The sentencing comes days after revelations White's legal fees could be paid by the TCC if he is not convicted.
White has pleaded guilty to interfering with an executive officer by signing the deal with the former Deputy Premier Bryan Green last year.
The agreement gave the TCC a monopoly on building accreditation in the state.
But White's lawyer has urged Chief Justice Peter Underwood not to convict his client, saying White did not realise he was committing a crime when he signed the deal.
An unscheduled hearing was held on Thursday after it was revealed the TCC may pay White's legal fees if he is not convicted.
Green pleaded not guilty to the same charge, but a jury was unable to reach a verdict at the end of his trial.
The Director of Public Prosecutions, Tim Ellis, is still considering whether to re-try Green. |
I'd imagine it'd be a fine wouldn't it? Rather then jail time? _________________ Ðavâgé
