Very late with this news.
Rudd was asked this question a couple of weeks ago and the answer was the same as you just read.

I suppose you saw that article and thought "finally a crack has appeared".
Well, Rudd has been very clear on the immigration issue. For starters he wants to close the Nauru detention centre, but is not privy to the commercial contracts that Howard has signed so cannot give a time frame.
Secondly he wants to give priority to people already on waiting lists for immigration. Thats fair is it not?
Xmas Island will be used for boat people while the usual checks are carried out.
All this was available for scrutiny weeks ago.

Hope you saw this article to;

Rudd just lost the boat people vote, they are now thinking they are going on a World cruise, six months to Australia six back.

The right way? Would it be 'right' to wait in a refugee camp in Sudan for a decade waiting for the racist Liberals to decide to accept African immigrants again?

I think it's 'right' to do whatever the hell you can to get your family and friends out of the way of trouble, regardless of what "queues" you jump.

In a sense I'm happy because Rudd has some common sense (Not necessarily on this issue, but in general), but on another level where was the real choice for the voters?

On this issue, I think he's right. I know there are people who believe that open borders are a valid policy, but I'd always been skeptical. I remember Annette Ellis (Labor MP for Canberra) telling me that Howard only utilised detention centres because he was racist and was using divisive politics... I wonder if that position would have been modified slightly these days?

You obviously haven't been to Perth. The streets are starting to fill with African refugees who know how to live by the sword. We've had these dudes attacking kids outside Maccas stores with machettes and all sorts of shit.
You wouldn't put a jack russel in a cage with a pit bull so .....???

Yeah, but skids, everything is perfect in dreamland.

I mean, I guess a country shouldn't have the right to choose who they let in, because that would be racist afterall. What a wank.
