Yep, Costello is running scared.

He thought he could just sit back and wait for JH's retirement, then take over. Now, he would actually have to do some work to not only maintain his status within the Party, but to change the public perception of being a snivelling little rat.

No more coat tails for you, Costello.

Only cowards jump from a sinking ship, and you are the first one off.

Surely, you jest, Jock ?

He would've simply inherited the party leadership. No courage needed.

The most difficult time for any oppo leader is immediately a new government is elected. Costello knows that and simply bailed out.

yes, the leadership would've been his but taking what he said on face value i am happy to accept he is putting his family first. having said that, it would be politically savvy to lay low and in 12-18 mths time rise from the ashes so to speak.

I suggest those of you who think we are being a bit harsh do some reading over Costello's history.

Costello is using his brains for once....give it all away, jump from a sinking ship that is sinking and worry about his family. That is using brains.
At least he has still got a family.TRhe bloke that was dishing out Osama Bin Laden posters in Lindsay has no longer got a wife or family...he has been kicked out of his home..................

Great comment on Radio, they wreck the car and then gave him the keys.

Costello will cause a bi election sooner rather than later.

Jeffrey didn't take long to have a crack. Who said factionalism doesn't run deep in the Liberal Party.
