Post subject: Lack Of Sleep Is Deadly. | |
|
Herald Sun 25th September 2007.
"People who do not get enough sleep are more than twice as likely to die of heart disease.
A British study released yesterday said the reasons were unclear, but researches said the lack of sleep appeared to increase blood pressure.
A 17-year analysis of 10,000 government workers showed those who cut their sleep from seven hours a night to five or less faced a 1.7-fold increased risk of death from all causes and more than double the risk of heart attack death.
The findings highlight a danger in busy modern lifestyles, said Francesco Cappuccio, proferssor of cardiovascular medicine.
Previous research has highlighted the health risks of shift work and disrupted sleep"
A huge study over 17 years. The risks are quite significant and at times I wonder whether I should go to bed early rather than sit up late and post on Nicks. There is a large volume of research comming out on sleep and its effects and it is quite significant. Add to this smoking, drinking and poor diet and you can see why people drop off early. What is also significant is that the quality of sleep is an issue as well, not just the time spent in bed.
I notice many are on here in the wee hours of the morning.

7 hours is normally enough unless I'm really physically or mentally tired. 9 hours or more and I feel worse than if I had 5. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

However, like all government 'workers' (?), they make up for any lost sleep whilst at 'work'.
I much prefer to refer to them as government employees. _________________ Whale

I often feel tired these days, although it's strange cos I would have thought I sleep fairly well. Bedtime is usually between 12-2, and I usually wake up around 8-9... I think it's fair to say I get an average of around 7 hours sleep, which is supposed to be the ideal number, I think. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

It's the quality of our sleep that's important. Not the amount. _________________ Donny.

That is true. But how do you judge the quality of your sleep. Especially if you don't know any better. I try for 7 or 8 hours a night and at times could do with more.
I think I wake 4 or 5 times a night and stare at the clock. Do people actually sleep without waking all night? _________________ Born, Live and Die a Magpie |

Just did a fatigue management course at work. One thing that amazed me was that 20 hours without sleep equates to a BAC of 0.08. _________________ Don't count the days, make the days count. |

There was a doctor (intern) in the US who finished a massive shift. Drove home and had an accident. He killed someone. This has promoted a lot of debate on the effects of lack of sleep in the medical profession.
This also opens up debate about employers liability for their employees. If you are asked to do a huge shift who is at fault if something happens?
Also, is a 15 minute powernap adequate? The TAC tell us its enough. _________________ Born, Live and Die a Magpie |

This is a worry. Once or twice I have driven home from clubs at 3, 4 AM, not having drunk anything, but I still feel kind of light-headed. Trouble is, there isn't really any way of measuring whether you're 'too' tired to drive (short of actually having trouble staying awake at the wheel). _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

That's because the pounding Doof Doof music has busted your vibrations (put you out of sync) But of course it isn't safe to drive on very little sleep.
I can't sit at a computer too long before feeling wacked out. _________________ understanding stuff, with endeavour to overstand.. |
