Post subject: Nuclear Power is no solution to Climate ChangeReply with quote

Nuclear Power is expensive, dangerous, and produces contaminated waste which cannot be safely disposed of. It makes weapons of mass destruction and is responsible for global conflict. For some reason the Australian government is pushing nuclear power as the future power source for our country in preference to Solar Energy. It is hard to comprehend why anyone would even consider such a path. Solar Power is clean, safe, and once the initial installation cost is met, it's free. If there's one thing that we have an abundance of in Australia, it's sun. China is now producing solar panels far cheaper than previously available and prices will continue to fall if we increase demand. I reckon Mr and Mrs Average in Australia would much prefer to have a solar panel on their roof than a Nuclear Reactor in their back yard. The political reasoning seems to be focused around the word "power" meaning control. They would prefer to have a centralized grid, run and controlled by a big corporation, when in reality we are quite capable of being far more self sufficient. You could be forgiven for thinking this policy was written by the boss of a Uranium Mining Company, not by an elected government. Australia’s Foreign Policy openly opposes Iran having Nuclear Power. That’s probably a good thing. Nuclear Weapons in the hands of the Iranian President is a scary thought, but how hypocritical we must look to Mr and Mrs Average in Iran when we tell them they are not allowed to go down the Nuclear path but we can. Surely we would earn more respect from the next generation of Iranians buy going to them and saying “you drop your nuclear plans and we’ll drop ours”. We have an election due in Australia later this year, maybe that’s a good opportunity for a change of thinking.

Go Pies!!!!!!!

Saw an intersting article about Uranium.
The world has about a 30 year supply if used to generate electricity so Nuke power is only a stop gap measure anyway

Sounds like a load of superstitious greenie nonsense. There is an irrational fear about nuclear power, that somehow power stations will leak and fry everyone, or that radioactive waste will start flowing from our taps.

If you believe in the global warming hype then nuclear power is part of the solution being one of the safest and cleanest sources of energy. Other sources like wind and solar are also part of the solution but are not realistic alternatives by themselves. They are too intermittent by nature and the technology is not yet available to store the energy.

The reason why we can produce nuclear power and not Iran is that Iran's president is a dangerous madman who has threatened other countries.

The Chernobyl accident occurred over 20 years ago at a Soviet power station, not exactly relevant to the nuclear power industry today which has progressed significantly since then. There are hundreds of power plants around the world today and they aren't spontaneously exploding like Chernobyl. The page linked doesn't seem very accurate either. For one it says 10,000 people died as a result. The United Nation's Chernobyl Project led by the WHO and IAEA in 2005 attributed 56 direct deaths as a result. Quite a difference.
