Deadly crossing was 'low risk'
August 22, 2007

THE level crossing at the center of today's fatal collision between a truck and a train was 'low risk' and not scheduled for an upgrade.

A Tyabb man, 57, was killed when his light tray truck hit the passenger train on the Stony Point/Frankston line at 10:45 today.

The Somerville level crossing was not scheduled for an upgrade and was deemed low risk by authorities.

It is one of eight on the Stony Point line fitted with flashing lights and bells.

About 40 people were on board the Frankston-bound train when it collided with a truck at Bungower Road in Somerville around 10.45am.

The truck driver died at the scene.
