Jim Keays in hospital
July 24, 2007

AUSTRALIAN music legend Jim Keays is battling kidney failure in a London hospital.

Keays, 60, fell ill over the weekend and is hooked up to a dialysis machine.

Keays and wife Karin are holidaying in London with family.

Music industry sources said Keays felt sick in London last week, went to hospital and was discharged. He was planning to fly home before suffering the kidney collapse, with sources saying he was lucky to be on the ground, not in the air, when he collapsed.

Keays is still scheduled to return home on the weekend.

"Jim's a fighter, he's a tenacious guy," friend and music industry historian Glenn A. Baker said yesterday. "I'm sure he's approaching this with his normal resilience. He's a wonderful man, widely admired and regarded by us all."

Keays found fame as frontman of the Masters Apprentices, with Glenn Wheatley on bass.

Most recently, Keays toured as a part of the trio Cotton Keays Morris, with Darryl Cotton and Russell Morris.

Neither Cotton nor Morris was available for comment yesterday. The trio, who tour regularly, are on a break but have a show lined up for Barooga on August 17.

It would be "easy to lie" but I remain "undecided". Maybe I'm just "living in a child's dream".

Jim, just "do what you wanna do" but I hope it's a long time til you're "buried and dead" because when that happens , we "poor boys" under the "southern cross" will be saying "it's all over now".

Fight long and hard Jim; we're losing too many of your ilk lately.

Mr J's old band's keyboard player had Jim Keays dog a few years back, and every Thursday Night the dog, Kiya I think her name was, would come out to the carport, lie on an old beanbag and just listen to the music for the 3 hours of practice. As soon as the boys had finished the dog would then just get up and wander back inside. They were loud, and the dog loved the music. She was there biggest and most loyal fan.

Keays hopes to master cancer
August 08, 2007

AUSTRALIAN rock legend Jim Keays is battling cancer. He has been diagnosed with myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow.

Keays fell ill last month while on holidays in England, where doctors found his kidneys had failed.

He was immediately placed on dialysis and made arrangements to come home.

Myeloma often manifests itself as kidney disease and British doctors quickly identified the source of his illness.

"It's treatable and it often goes into remission," said an upbeat Keays, 60, from his Glen Iris home last night.

"I started chemotherapy last week and I am on dialysis, and I am confident both will work.

"My kidneys are running on about 5 per cent, but they have improved a little already."

Surrounded by his family -- wife Karin and daughters Holly, 11, and Bonnie, 5 -- the former Master's Apprentices frontman spoke of plans for the future.
