One of the greatest film directors of the 20th century, Ingmar Bergman, died last night.
I discovered Bergman early last year when I saw The Seventh Seal. There was something about all the angst and alienation of it that grabbed me, and since then he has become my favourite director.
Other great films are Wild Strawberries (1957), Through a Glass Darkly (1961), Winter Light (1962), The Silence (1963), Persona (1966) and Cries and Whispers (1973). All of which are well worth seeing.
Bergman was one of the real artists in the world of filmmaking.
I haven't found any really detailed newspaper articles, but here is the one from the abc site:

One of Bergman's great contemporaries, Michelangelo Antonioni, has also passed away today, aged 94.
Antonioni was an Italian director, but was most famous for the British film Blow-Up, which is considered a masterpiece by many film critics and was very popular with audiences as well. He also directed landmark films such as L'Avventura and The Passenger.

Not one of my personal favourite directors, at least compared to Bergman, but Blow-Up is definitely one of my all-time favourite films, and there is no doubting that he was a very talented filmmaker.
Very sad day for the film world. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Who's next, Uwe Boll? _________________ "There's an old saying in Tennessee, I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee, that says, fool me once, shame on... shame on you. Fool me... you can't get fooled again." - Oscar Wilde |

Bergman was a cinematic genius.
As was Antonioni. I watched "Blow Up" in his honour last night. _________________ Keep going, Shintaro. |
