A MAN has died and two other people have been critically injured by a gunman who is still on the loose in Melbourne's central business district this morning.
The man was shot after trying to come to a woman's aid in the city this morning.
The woman and another man have suffered serious injuries after the shooting happened about 8.15.
A man opened fire on the corner of Flinders Lane and Williams St in Melbourne.
Witnesses reported a man getting out of a taxi with a women, allegedly dragging her by her hair, before opening fire on two passersby who tried to come to her aid.
The gunman is about 183cm tall, wearing black jeans, a denim jacket, and with short, light brown hair.
Witnesses have reported hearing six or seven shots in the area before police and emergency services arrived.
A spokesman for the Ambulance service said the circumstances of the shooting were unclear.
"As you can imagine it's quite early and there's a lot of information to get out," he said.
The two injured people have been taken to the Alfred and Royal Melbourne Hospitals and are listed as serious. It is believed they are suffering gunshot wounds to the upper body.
One witness rang her mother and said: "Mum, I've just witnessed this horrible shooting, I have to go." She reported seeing people lying in the street.
Another witness, Peter, said he rang emergency services after coming across the scene, but he initially thought it was a car crash with three people in the gutter and on the street.
"The people who were standing around didn't seem to be perturbed by anyone with a gun, it was almost as if there had been a car accident," Peter said.
People working in the Rialto building have reportedly been told not to leave their offices.
Police said they are still searching the area around the Melbourne landmark.
The crime scene has triggered peak-hour traffic chaos, after the shooting took place about 8.15am.
The intersection of Flinders Lane and William St is closed, with the Critical Incident Response Team on the ground to find the shooter.
Police have asked motorists and pedestrians to give the area a wide berth and be patient with traffic detours.

Ambulance flew past me when I was walking down William St this morning. I work not far from the incident, and have another friend that works near William and Collins.
Very sad. |

That's really messed up. I used to work in the Rialto, just near there. Condolences to the families of the dead and injured. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

This is why more and more crime happens, ppl try to help out and then get injured themselves. Makes you think twice about helping anyone out that looks in trouble. It's a weird time for a shooting... hope they catch the prick. _________________ Like Nicks, why not donate

And this is the sad thing, people will hear stories like this and, now, if someone's getting kicked to death on a footpath, they'll think twice about getting involved.
I've wondered before, if I was attacked or mugged in the middle of a crowded shopping centre, would any passers-by come to my aid? Maybe a few decades ago someone would, but these days there would just be too much chance of getting injured youself. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

I have witnessed a couple of assaults before, and have found that yelling from a distance to the assailant to cut it out has worked quite well, especially when you live opposite a park, with reflective film on the windows and security door that has one way vision. They have no idea who is watching them or where I am yelling from. But this certainly makes you think about getting involved. Trouble is that ringing the police takes way too long for them to turn up. _________________ Kaylene.

Interesting day in the city, was shocked to hear about this as I headed in but I am suprised they kept looking as long as they did, the bloke was long gone by then, they found the gun near Flinders St station yet initial reports said he headed off in the opposite direction. But it was a sad sight to see the dead body (covered by a blanket) just lying their in the middle of the road a few hours later and reports are they were run over after being shot as well
Condolences to his family and hopefully a full recovery to the injured and they catch this bloke soon
Also does anyone know if the Taxi driver has come forward yet? Most of the day they were asking them to come forward |
