Malthouse in call for tribunal penalty review
By Peter Ker
February 27 2003
Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse has called on the AFL to review its tribunal verdicts, following the one-match suspensions handed down to Hawthorn's Luke Hodge and Richmond's Mark Chaffey this week.
Malthouse said the league needed to review the situation that will result in Chaffey missing the Tigers' round-one match against Collingwood, while Hodge, reported for a similar incident, is able to serve his one-match penalty for charging in this weekend's Wizard Cup game, also against the Magpies.
Malthouse said the inequality of the two penalties was one of several tribunal issues that needed to be addressed.
"I daresay the Chaffey and Hodge situation will be looked at by the AFL, or should be looked at by the AFL, to see if they can get some clarity in regards to the expense of the suspension," he said.
"Missing a Wizard Cup game doesn't really tally up to missing the first round of the AFL."
Both players received one-week suspensions for similar charging incidents in the first round of the Wizard Cup.
Had Richmond progressed to this week's quarter-finals of the pre-season competition, Chaffey could have also served his penalty before the home-and-away season.
Richmond football director Greg Miller said although the club would not appeal against the decision, it would be writing to the AFL to point out the inequalities.
"There's no grounds for an appeal because you have to judge it on its own case, but I guess any reasonable person would see the inequality created by what happened," he said.
Malthouse said he planned to present a video tape to next month's coaches' conference in a bid to highlight seemingly similar on-field incidents that have attracted different verdicts from the tribunal.
"My biggest worry about it is that there is too many similar-type incidents drawing different penalties, and in some instances aren't penalised at all," he said.
"There could be some absolute valid reason, but I think most football punters would like to know the thoughts of the tribunal . . . it just clears a few muddy waters up."
Collingwood midfielder Paul Licuria participated in yesterday's training session at Jock McHale stadium, after missing Sunday's Wizard Cup game against Carlton with a hip complaint.
Malthouse said the reigning Copeland Trophy winner was a chance to play in Sunday night's quarter-final against Hawthorn.
"We will make an assessment. This time of the year you've just got to be cautious and make sure they are ready to go," he said. "It was touch and go last week, but we elected not to put him in the 28 on the Thursday . . . we took the gamble that we could get over the line without those sort of players."
Malthouse said that although disappointed with the Magpies' second- and third-quarter performances on Sunday, he was happy for his side to be gradually improving, and hoped to continue "on the incline" against Hawthorn this week.
"Their game plan hasn't changed, but they've got a talented ruckman who will help them certainly through the middle and also be a goalkicking ruckman," he said.
Malthouse said the maturing of Hawthorn's younger players, such as utility Campbell Brown, would also make them a tougher opponent than last season.
"They'll be a very, very worthy opponent, no doubt," he said.

i thought Mick's comments were very tactful and diplomatic and the AFL would be remiss to fine him for that.....so maybe we can keep the $5000 in kitty for when he does tell them what he thinks later in the season.

Does anyone agree with a 5 or 10 minute sin bin? This way you are not reported and in turn could not be suspended. A penny for your thoughts........

It's a good idea. Mick is on something with this one. You would have thought that the AFL would have implemented this kind of system a long time ago. Atleast we would gain some sort of consistency with lengths of suspension.

Those 2 cases once again just reinforce the inconsistency and unfairness of the tribunal. Dont even get me started on Clokey's sentence

I actually remember the send off rule, had to go off for the rest of one quarter then sit off for the next, I don't think it was too successful really, did they use it in the AFL, i can't remember?? anyways, I just don't see the Sin Bin thing working...I think a yellow card situatiuon may be better...if you accumulate a certain amount of yellow cards then you miss a game.....do not want the umpires to hold them up, just notify the player that he has been given a yellow card.....for more serious cases though the tribunal should be used..but tiggy touch wood decisions should not be taken that far.....anyways, just my thoughts
cheers
