Patient safety at the xpense of further travel time has to be the priority |
That is the case. That is exactly what happened, and yes, there isn't much that can be done. But, it's pretty pathetic that it has gone this far. |
Yeah true Joel - it's the on-call that is the issue - Willi had to close maternity as they just couldn't get enough obs anaesthetists to fill on-call 24 hours a day seven days a week unfortunately

Frankston and Rosebud Hospitals are owned by the same people... Southern Health. They have the SAME facilities! They also have the SAME nursing staff!
One of the nurses from ROSEBUD hospital maternity unit set up a special in-school program that gives teenage girls an inside view of exactly what pregnancy is all about (she even bought in a placenta, and showed graphic pictures of different kinds of births) and the risks of falling pregnant at a young age. She got FULL funding from the AUSTRALIAN government to take the program around Australia! This program reduced the teen pregnancy rate in country area's (where it was first started) by an astounding 60%.
Now tell me that the rosebud hospital has worse services/facilities than frankston! i say it has better! _________________ SuCK IT uP PRINCESS |

Ah no Leelee they are not Southern Health they are Peninsula Health - Southern Health includes Monash, Dandy and Morabbin campuses not Frankston and not Rosebud
They are not "owned" by a specific group or company - they are public health facilities owned by the state of Victoria and its people and ultimately controlled by DHS
But no matter what the facilties, the nursing staff, the excellent programs developed and implemented or anything else - if you don't have the trained, skilled medical staff availabile around the clock to provide an appropraite and safe service then you can't have it - sad but true! _________________ “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” |

Birthing unit protests
Jane Metlikovec
March 31, 2007
EXPECTANT mothers furious at the possibility of being shunted between hospitals just hours after giving birth have protested against the closure of a birthing unit.
More than 50 new and expectant mothers rallied outside Frankston Hospital yesterday, two weeks after Peninsula Health announced it would stop births at Rosebud Hospital.
The decision to relocate services from Rosebud to Frankston was made when it was unable to get two obstetricians to keep the 13-bed suite running, Peninsula Health has said.
A spokeswoman said after giving birth, women could be transferred via ambulance to Rosebud for the duration of their hospital stay.
But Rosebud mother Gaye Parker said she was concerned she would be forced to return to Rosebud in her own car just four hours after the birth of her fourth child in May.
"We know that they will want to get us out of the hospital because it is so busy and they need the beds, but we have no idea if an ambulance will be available," she said.
"My husband will have to drive our car with the baby seat in it to Frankston, just in case."
Ms Parker, told only last week she would be unable to have her baby at Rosebud, said her greatest fear was giving birth during the minimum 30-minute trip to Frankston.
Opposition health spokeswoman Helen Shardey said it was not good enough for mothers to be sent back to Rosebud within hours of giving birth.
"I can't think of anything worse for mother-child bonding, feeding and simply getting over childbirth than throwing the mother straight into a vehicle," Ms Shardey said.
