I think it's safe to say nobody was really surprised by the result.
State Liberals really are struggling at the moment, aren't they. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

They are starting to suffer federally as well though.
I don't think it will be long until a federal election is called and Labor will be in power again.I think nearly every state has a Labor government now so it is only a matter of time til its the same federally. _________________ Collingwood:Not just a club, but a way of life!

correct magpiesgirl. Every State and Territory is run by a Labor Government. The Federal Election can and must be called anytime between June this year and early January 2008. More than likely it'll be held around October/November. _________________ Jacqui © Proud Pies 2003 and beyond |

It does make it interesting, as Howard is still in control (to some extent) of when he wants to call the election. I assume he will try to hold off for a while in the hope that Rudd's popularity will settle down a little, although at the moment that doesn't seem likely. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

There is always a honeymoon period for new leaders, ie. refer to Mark Latham. Rudd's popularity will more than likely die off, but it looks like it might be a fair bit closer this time around. |

No honeymoon Joel. Simple fact is the Howard government is out of touch with the majority of Australians. The fact that more than 50% of us voted against the coalition at the last election proves this point.
The Liberals missed the boat to invigorate themselves and move forward when they continued to put their faith in the old, war mongering and deaf Howard over the socially aware Costello.
Cannot wait for this election to come. |

I see. I like the way you talk. Interesting explanation. By the way, do you mind if I ask you a personal question? |

The difference, I think, between Rudd and Latham (and Beazley, and Crean for that matter), is that Rudd comes across as someone you can respect. To be honest, I couldn't have imagined any of the last three opposition leaders as prime ministers, whereas with Rudd, I can.
Of course, you're right about the honeymoon period, and that is why Howard will probably try to call an election later rather than sooner.
I think Howard will have to overcome much greater odds this election, though, than he has in the past: Many people will simply want a change, after Howard has been PM for so long, and Rudd provides a viable alternative.
I still think Howard would be the better leader out of the two, but I don't know if that will be enough for him to hold on.
Of course, there is the chance that Rudd's more conservative views could lead left-wing Labor voters to flock to the Greens, but I think those people would probably vote for Labor just to get Howard out of office. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |
