Five pages and going very strong the ability to debate discuss and argue opinions is alive and well and so it should be the day when as a group we cant come together with different reasons and why's and should's and shouldnt's will be the day most probably when the sun wont rise.
I've enjoyed thoroughly reading everyones postings re the death penalty although im disapointed no one picked up on the drunk drivers killing other innocent people on our roads, i was looking forward to that debate but we might discuss that one further down the track.
Just like the abortion issue the death penalty issue is as just as emotional and stirs up heartfelt passion and so it should.
Infact an abortion topic i reckon would be a ripper, what ive enjoyed about this topic is it never became personal or displayed any hatred to other posters..its now moved on to God and that cant be a bad thing.
For the record i despise the death penalty its not the answer and is flawed with mistakes... the killing of one innocent victim via death penalty makes it truly the horror it really is, Its been proven time and time again that innocent people amidst the latest technology of DNA testing are facing death..as a civilised society we must not let that happen or even contemplate that happening.
I also appreciate the frustrations in our society of what is appeared to be soft sentences for hard and or distasteful crimes...and believe it or not we have many people in our community who support the tactics of solving such issues with the simplistic approach of drag em out the back and blow some brains out!
As a society we must have these type of discussions. its been great reading the reasons from others in how barbaric the death penalty really is....but would such a discussion happen if we all came on board and agreed with one another ?
Of course not!!
Do we hate Pauline Hanson personally because of her brand of politics ?
Do we hate the murderer more because the murder was more horrific ?
all intersting discussion points...recently i watched a doco featuring life on death row in an American jail ( where else ) it was appalling and very sad and to think we have the capabilities of forcing such sanctions against a fellow human being is pretty much bewildering.
I must be ageing because in such debates i love coming in from the other corner...the only dissapointment has been i reckon such issues should be debated in the open and more often.
Looking foward greatly to see where this topic heads _________________ Football is Greatness

Now, they'll revoke his student visa, and thus, making him ineligible to remain in the country so he'll have to be deported without doing time.
At least now he won't qualify for employment at a Telstra Call Centre ...... or will he? |
Mohammed Khan doesn't sound all that Indian to me. _________________ Jacqui © Proud Pies 2003 and beyond |

David wrote: | It's not really a contradiction, as the Torah clearly sanctions capital punishment, and for many different crimes. I assume that the commandment only refers to murder committed by the individual. Krzystof Kieslowski's masterpiece A Short Film About Killing deals specifically with this commandment, arguing that the two are essentially the same in the long run, although I still believe there is an important distinction between state-sanctioned execution and murder. |
I meant it as a throw away line David, but you've raised an interesting argument. Catholicism based on latin translations of the bible use thou shalt not kill, where many more modern protestant translations and the torah use thou shalt not murder. In a contextual sense you're probably right, murder makes more sense. (now there's a sentence you don't use everyday!)

Joffa:
What do you mean you're against the death penalty?
Are there two people using your account? Because its quite clear earlier on that you're all for it?

I know for a fact his position at the Clayton supermarket has been terminated.A friend of mine is the office manager there and told me about it last night. _________________ Collingwood:Not just a club, but a way of life!

i too was very gobsmacked by Joffa's complete turn around., but then, that's the power of debating I suppose, that with facts you can change people's minds/perception/attitude. _________________ Jacqui © Proud Pies 2003 and beyond |
