Whatever happened to little Johnny saying that a family is Mum and Dad and kids, not Dad and Dad and Mum and Mum.

That's why he's always been opposed to same sex marriages/rights.

So, what's made him change his mind?

I think the key word there is review PP. He's probably hoping those in favour of equal rights believe 'review' means 'change the law, whilst the dog whistling to the 'moral majority' types will let them know status quo remains.Nothing will come of it, apart from perhaps a white paper that will wither on the vine.

I would say it's another mistake by Howard: Long time champions of this issue will not be convinced by this token remark, and people who are anti-gay will be disgruntled.

totally agree with all above, but if we weren't having an election this year, this topic wouldn't even have been broached by Howard.

While it is understandable to be cynical at this sort of thing, you can also look on the optimistic side:

at least an approaching election means that politicians will start to take more notice of what the majority of Australians want.

Even though I support a lot of the Howard government's policies, I believe their views on gay rights are terribly outdated, so it is about time they made some inroads (although as London Dave suggested, it probably is nothing more than a token move).

Still, that does mean that both parties must attempt to 'woo' those swinging voters - and if that means committing to policies which they believe will have popular support (it is, after all, a democracy), then it could be a good thing.

And yes, I know that the popular decisions are not necessarily the right ones.

Bah, I'm over all of them. All of the parties are about "popularism", and to deny that is crap IMO. Rudd will probably say something similar, ie. if he becomes PM he promises to review same sex rights. But, in the end, he will do nothing - just as Howard will do nothing.

Labour voters will always bag Liberal policies, and vice versa.

What made Howard change his mind? I'd argue he hasn't changed is mind, but he's doing it to atleast be seen to be thinking about it.

Btw, if people think life under Labor is going to be some sort of utopia, or all their (or the Australian societies') ills are going to be magically solved.....well, you've got to be kidding.

I'm part of the gay community, not directly, but all of my close friends are gay and lesbian, and I go in the Mardi Gras with them every year. The Sydney Gay community is pretty much outraged by what he has said. Every year they have written him a letter asking for acknowledgement of the Mardi Gras etc, and last year he wrote back a very abrupt letter saying they will never receive recognision and to stop writing every year.

What he is proposed is not giving gay rights, it's just for government based purposes to help them with their own administration. It's such a load of crap.

It's time to go....
