Hird hurt in thigh blow
09 February 2003 Sunday Herald Sun
By SCOT HIRD

ESSENDON captain James Hird became the Bombers' first match casualty for the season after he was trod on by a teammate in a torrid inter-club match at Windy Hill yesterday.

Coach Kevin Sheedy was reportedly more upset at having news of the injury leak from his "closed" training session than seeing Hird walk off during the second quarter for ice treatment to his leg.

In a tussle for the ball an opponent's foot connected with Hird's thigh, just above the knee.

He returned to the action during the fourth quarter but after a brief spell in the forward line again left the field.

Bomber officials said last night the injury was minor and that Hird would be back at training this week.

Sheedy and assistant Mark Harvey roamed the ground yesterday, calling the shots for players and directing ball traffic.

Both were impressed by Essendon newcomer, former Brisbane Lion Damian Cupido, who in a brilliant first quarter kicked three goals and was prominent throughout the match.

Full forward Matthew Lloyd was in sparkling form, kicking five goals at full forward, while another player who could add firepower to the Essendon attack was first-round draft pick Jason Laycock.

After a week at camp in Bendigo, Essendon officials believed a number of players have reached peak preseason form.

Among them are the Johnsons, Jason and Mark, while Shane Harvey, the brother of North Melbourne rover Brent, also staked his claim for a Wizard Cup berth.
