South Park lampoons Irwin
Paul Kent in London
October 27, 2006
STEVE Irwin's still grieving family faces more heartbreak after the creators of the South Park released a cartoon making fun of his death.
The episode is set to be released in the US this week and shows Irwin walking around a fancy dress party in Hell with a stingray sticking out of his chest.
Irwin, 44, died just eight weeks ago when a stingray spiked him in the heart as he was filming a segment for his daughter Bindi's upcoming children's documentary.
The show's creators have defended the episode with a callous disrespect for a family still grieving.
"We have offended people in the past and probably will again,'' a South Park spokesman told a London newspaper.
"We know that regular watchers will not be shocked.''

Quote: | As well as Irwin, hundreds of dead celebrities are at the party, hosted by Satan and including the likes of rapper Notorious B.I.G., Princess Diana and Adolf Hitler.
However none of those shown died as recently as Irwin, whose family is still recovering from his shock death on the Barrier Reef on September 4. |

I know it's not right, but I think it's hilarious. For some people, humour is the only way of coping with a fuc*#d up world. |

I am a fan of South Park and the show has offended every culture every religion every facet of the earth and not offended me. This hasn't offended me however very innapproapriate and poor timing, so soon after his death, it should not be aired. _________________ The black & white jumper, worn by heroes worshipped by millions. |

How could he die by a stingray in South Park when he was chopped up by the helicopter in the Frozen Man from 1996 episode? _________________ WELLLINGHAM ROVES IT....AND KICKS THE GOAL!!!!

So where do you draw the line?
If it's not OK after 8 weeks, what is suitable? 6 months, 2 years or never??
Every day in our world there are people grieving while others are laughing and partying....and lampooning. |

Some random celebrity being made fun of on South Park is hardly an issue. The fact that that celebrity is dead still doesn't make it an issue. The socially bred fear/respect for the dead is a superstitious remnant of a primitive and religious past, and i don't have time for it.
The wishes of Terry Irwin are a separate issue worth considering, but my opinion is the same. If they were airing the show on every street corner and projecting it onto the sky i would have a different view, but as it is she can switch off the tv and move on with her life. She doesn't have the right to censor people just because she is sad.
I think the fact that the conservative wankers who make South Park are so popular is a sign of a social disease, something that can't simply be oppressed into going away. _________________ I would be ashamed to admit that I had risen from the ranks. On the contrary Sherrife, I think their political views are refreshing.
Well I would, but let's face it, look at the Simpsons, Family Guy etc, all pretty left wing. And South Park are hardly exclusively conservative (the original movie was mostly aimed at conservative targets).
How can you say conservatism is a social disease? Surely it is difference of opinion that makes us democratic. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Saw the Irwin thing on youtube, it wasn't that bad.
I like South Park; The main thing would be is they attack EVERYONE (the most recent episode in the U.S. is lambasting Aethism).
The South Park Movie was funnier imo than Team America (which I still found hilarious). Some of Cartman's lines were hilarious. ("I hate you Kenny").
That said I'm not a fan of Trey or Matt personally. I saw an interview with them on SBS in 1998 when I was a HUGE SP fan; they came across as really concieted..
It doesn't really matter-If it's funny to watch; watch it!

I mean how long did it take for the 9/11 jokes to come about!
Australian's generally love black humour, we've got to be prepared to dish it and take it.
The thing I find strange with Irwin is that everyone I knew before he died thought he was an embarassment now suddenly he's a saint.
I didn't particularly like his style of nature (give me David Attenbourough any time) but his heart was in the right place and he at least was genuine. _________________ WELLLINGHAM ROVES IT....AND KICKS THE GOAL!!!!

Yep, the guys are wankers, but I think you'd have to be to make a show like South Park
That said, I liked some of the things they said about Team America when it came out, especially about Hollywood actors.
quality show South Park, need to watch it more often. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |
