Bux signs to 2005

COLLINGWOOD is celebrating not only its $1.5 million profit, but also the signature of captain Nathan Buckley to a contract that will tie him to the club until the end of 2005.

Some would regard that decision as Buckley committing himself to the Magpies for the remainder of his career. At 30, and approaching his 10th year with Collingwood, the five-time best-and-fairest winner has declared he wants a flag with the Magpies before he gives the game away.

In 2004 the well-paid Buckley will take a seat on to the Magpies' veteran list, a move that will assist the Pies in juggling their salary cap as only half of his cheque will need to be included.

Buckley's signing will be warmly greeted by the faithful, not so the news that the Pies might have to cap their social club membership because of huge interest, particularly those not already in.

A portion of the Pies' huge profit can be directly attributed to president Eddie McGuire, who has signed up both sons, Joseph and week-old Alexander, as Collingwood "Millennium" members. The 10-year ticket costs $925
