Post subject: Centrebet AFL Summaries | |
|
I have had a call from a Sydney PR firm wanting to know if we are interested in carrying Centrebet AFL summaries. The reason for this is that Centrebet want to build the footy betting side of the business but are prohibited by law from advertising. I told her to send them to me and we would decide whether or not we wanted to see them.
Here's the first one, get a load of the language... 'play-offs'? Give me a break - it's not hard to tell that it's coming out of NSW.
quote: Media Release 26 November, 2002
Pagan's new club more likely than his old one to reach next year's finals
Want to know why Denis Pagan left the club he coached to two titles to join this year's wooden spooners? Well, Centrebet's odds have the answer, with its prices saying that Carlton are more likely than the Kangaroos to reach next year's finals.
Carlton are $3.00 to bounce back from their annus horribilis in 2002 and qualify for the 2003 Australian Football League play-offs. The Kangaroos, however, are even longer odds to occupy one of the ladder's top eight rungs at the end of the regular season. The Arden Street club are $3.25 to reach the finals without their old boss.
"Pagan's decision to switch clubs is Carlton's gain and the Kangaroos' loss," says Centrebet's Gerard Daffy. "Brisbane, Port Adelaide, Adelaide, Collingwood, Essendon, Hawthorn, Richmond and Sydney are the eight favourites to participate in next year's play-offs but punters should not write off the Blues. Pagan is an outstanding coach."

What's in it for the site Mike?
I can't see the information has any great value of itself. Does the site get a drink out of it?

I doubt we're interested in their information - a third grader could have come up with more logic than that as to why North are likely to finish lower than the Blues - but if the site gets some monetary contribution from them I think we can put up with it.
Besides, might be a bit of a laugh every now and then..

No Mark, that was my first question when she phoned. It set her back a bit, I think she must have expected us to be so rapt at having the info sent to us that that would be enough.
So then I asked if the info was exclusive - nope.
Well why would we want it? That's when I got the story about advertising. So I just told her to send it to us and we'd have a look at it.
Picture the PR creative think tank that came up with this idea with the wankers sitting around creatively thinking - trying to solve the conundrum of being a PR firm for a client who's not allowed to advertise. One of them comes up with the idea of the century.
"The internet... web sites. There are kids out there who run web sites for football teams. Imagine their reaction to actually being recognised officially and being included in the official media report distribution list = they'd wet themselves".
"We can do even better than that. Let's ring them up and tell them that we will send them a special summary that they can use on their sites. They'll be falling all over themselves with excitement."
"And the client gets stacks of free exposure and we effectively circumvent the advertising prohibition. It can't miss, it's brilliant, we are so good, so very good!"
We're a bit hard to overawe.

Hard to overawe?
Well we get to see Collingwood each week don't we, so of course we are. After the GF it will take a lot to overawe us. It's your call Mike but I can't see any reason to accept their offer unless you were going to put ads on the site and this would increase traffic from their web site with increased chance of people clicking banners.

If we're not getting anything out of it then I'd be inclined to refuse it, it's just more work for nothing.
However, if you wanted to get them to send the odds to you I'm sure many many many posters could write a better summary than they have written - more factual AND entertaining.
BJ would rope it in over that rubbish. Maybe they'd pay for that

Don't have to accept or refuse, I have a feeling it's going to turn up anyway.
I have a refuse key on my keyboard, it's marked 'Delete' - I'll just use that if the stuff is as pathetic as today's offering.

Call me an old prude, but I'm not a fan of any sort of betting at all.
Given that this site is open to all ages, I believe that it is vice that should not be promoted to children.

Can't we arrange to reply with Dr Alf's turf tips (with the Doctor being suitably accommodated in the moolah department by Centrebet)? Kind of a tit for tat response.
As soon as you get an email from em saying the poms are 10 to 1 to lose the ashes again, let me know. Many LD roubles will be sent their way then!
Seriosly, tell em they can post here, but only if they use the email centrebet@magpies.net, which of course, they pay for!
BW, you old prude...no vices to be exposed to minors here...does that mean I can't say how hungover I am when tuning into your matchday webcasts next season?
