Post subject: wakelin yet to re-sign | |
|
Wakelin is out of contract and could be a surprise nomination for the AFL pre-season draft.
Wakelin and midfielder Heath Scotland remain uncontracted and in limbo just over a week before the grand finalists resume full training in preparation for next year.
It is believed Collingwood has room within its salary cap to recontract both Wakelin and Scotland, despite the increased burden after securing Shane Woewodin from Melbourne.
Part of the 2000 Brownlow medallist's financial requirements will be met by the Demons, who have signed a confidentiality agreement which prevents them from revealing the extent of the subsidy.
Wakelin's manager Marvin Weinberg today said he had spoken to rival clubs about the availability of his client and did not rule out a change of club via the December draft.
"Anything is possible," Weinberg said.
"Shane wants to stay at Collingwood, but only on his terms.
"We hope it will be resolved as quickly as possible so that he can start training with the group next week.
"We are not poles apart."
Negotiations between Collingwood and Wakelin have broken down over the terms and remuneration of a new deal.
Weinberg has pushed for a three-year deal, while the Magpies are believed to have remained firm on their offer of a two-year contract for Wakelin.
The 28-year-old Wakelin played all 25 games this year and finished equal fourth in the Magpies' best-and-fairest award in his second season since crossing from St Kilda.
Negotiations between Collingwood and Scotland's manager Paul Connors have stalled, but Magpies football manager Neil Balme today said he was optimistic of a resolution.
"Heath is very much a required player," Balme said.
"He's keen and we're keen, so hopefully a new contract can be arranged before the end of the month."
Scotland, 22, was one of Collingwood's biggest improvers this year, playing in 19 games including all three finals

Don't worry Wakelin won't be going anywhere just he's manager wanting more $$$ but he will stay. Same with Heath. There not stupid enough to change clubs and give up a premiership for a few extra dollars. If they want to leave then as eddie would say we don't want them.

Shane Wakelin will be in Black & White for the rest of his career.
Heath Scotland will stay, i just think hes worried about playing time with the arrival of Woewodin.

Jerry Maguire has a lot to answer for. These bloody money hungry managers. I'm not denying anyone getting payed as much as they can but the greed of some are causing a real problem. Just look at what one single player's payment can do to a club (Woewodin). Collingwood do not want to be in the position of some other clubs and be forced to let good players go simply because they cannot afford them. I would hate to see anyone at Collingwood go but the pain today would be easier than two years down the track. Offering a two year contract makes good business sense to properly manage the finances of the Club into the future. Collingwood have a young list, and with success to come (undeniably) these players will rightly ask for more money as time goes by. Our management are excellent and tough decisions need to be made sometimes for the good of the Club.
