The AFL have sent letters to Headland and ND telling them they may be in controvention of AFL rules of the draft by stipulating to which club they want to go.
Of course Wayne Carey can hawk himself all over the country with the full knowledge and tacit approval of the AFL.

yeah I was thinking that myself, I s'pose the difference is Carey is not going in the draft, he's being traded, so it's between him and the roos, whereas the draft is between the players and the AFL. Still, it seems a bit wierd to me, Brisbane are cutting their nose off to spite their face imo.

Carey was still in contract and the rules are a little bit different.

All AFL contracts have fixed expirey dates of 31st October.
Technically all three are still under contract.
What is the difference?

the difference is Carey's not going in the draft. he's being traded. If Headland said to Brissy "trade me to West Coast" and they tried, there would be no problem. If we trade Nick to Sydney, there will be no problem. It's only if they try to "rig" the draft by telling or making it known that other teams shouldn't pick them.

Yes Ben,
I agree entirely, IF that was the case and none were traded before the draft.
But at THIS point in time there is no difference between any of them.
North may trade Carey (and probably will)
Brisbane may trade Headland (and probably will)
We may trade Nick (and probably will)
The posturing of clubs ie "we will not trade" etc is crap and cannot really be taken into account, something is better than nothing.
I think my point remains, on this issue (like so many others) the AFL are hypocrites

I agree that there definitely seems to be different rules for different players! And what about Lockett? Wasn't there some comment about no-one else had better draft him because he was only prepared to play with the Swans? And what about Pavlich's manager talking to every Club?
The AFL has NO CONSISTENCY whatsoever, regardless of whether it's the draft, players moving or the salary cap!

Have to agree with you there Murray. On the other hand it is the AFL do you really expect any consistency, just look at the Tribunal. Consistently inconsistent.
