Finals training has claimed its first victim – field umpire Bryan Sheehan will miss the rest of the September action.

Sheehan, a veteran of more than 300 games and the third most experienced umpire in AFL/VFL history, tore his hamstring at training last night and has been forced to withdraw from officiating tomorrow’s 1st semi-final between Port Adelaide and Essendon.

“He injured his hamstring in the second last match of the year in Adelaide and we gave him a couple of weeks to get up again but unfortunately he did it again at training last night,” AFL umpires coach Rowan Sawers said today.

Sheehan, 43, is the most experienced umpire on the 2002 list and has officiated 37 finals, including six Grand Finals.


He has been replaced tomorrow by Stephen McBurney, while Darren Goldspink will be the new emergency umpire.
