Why do people still keep referring to the ALP as a "left wing" party? They are nothing of the kind, and haven't been for nearly 30 years ... since Whitlam got the flick.
The only left wing parties around these days are the Greens and the Socialists.
The AFL, with or without Demetriou and Co, is still one of the most conservative organisations on the planet.
Football is a right wing game, simple as that.

To true, I think many percieve the AFL as left due to it's Socialistic policies.  |

Yeah. It's pretty stupid the way the term "socialist" or "communist" is used in relation to things like the draft and the salary cap.
The AFL clubs are just franchises within the over-all AFL brand. The draft and salary cap are just ways of ensuring that the individual franchises remain viable.
It's just a case of one bunch of capitalists looking after the interests of 16 other bunches of capitalists, so they are all free to screw the public ... as capitalists do. |

well hearing about at least one of Demetriou's speeches, he is strongly left-wing, and so I assumed that the AFL's 'socialist policies' had a lot to do with his own personal political views. After all, if you believe that Socialism is the way to run a country, why not run the football league like that? But agreed I'd imagine the club presidents would mostly have Liberal party affiliations so its probably pretty balanced. To be honest I don't know what Jake Niall has a problem with though, maybe he didn't have anything to write. It's only a footy competition after all....

Demetriou runs the AFL according to your perception of his political leanings based upon hearing about[/i[ at [i]least one of his speeches?
Get a handle on reality mate. The AFL structure was set up long before Demetriou was on the horizon. To even suggest the reason the comp is run along the lines it is based upon your 'argument' is laughable in the extreme. The AFL structure, I'd assume, is based upon US models of drafts, franchise etc. Demetriou may well be left wing, or right wing, or double winged or wingless, but he hasn't set up the AFL. He's running along with someone else's 'plan'. |

I hate nothing more than bringing politics into sport, but it seems to happen way to often these days it's a bloody sport.

well I don't know. It's just a theory. I guess the thing about the draft, salary cap, priority picks etc. is it tries to maintain equality for all clubs, and tries to stifle the growth of the big clubs and help the struggling ones, which is sort of socialist or at least anti-capitalist. I don't know what I'm talking about I'm too tired today but it sort of makes sense now.
