Actress Shelley Winters dies
From correspondents in Los Angeles
15jan06

US actress Shelley Winters, a two-time Academy Award winner, died at a Southern California nursing home early on Saturday, a spokeswoman said. She was 85.

Winters died at the Rehabilitation Centre of Beverly Hills at about 6:15am local time (1:15am AEDT Sunday), a spokeswoman with the centre said. She declined to disclose the cause of death.
Winters was admitted to hospital in October after suffering a heart attack.

In 1959, she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of the slobbish Mrs Van Daan hiding with others from the Nazis in The Diary of Anne Frank. After a variety of other movies, she won again playing the violent mother of a blind girl in A Patch of Blue (1965).

Yes, I've been guilty of making Shelley Winters jokes, re: Possiedon Adventure etc., but she truly was a great actress and quiete a siren in her time. As for A Patch of Blue, that was a brilliant movie. I remember the young blind girls birthday was the same as mine (23rd of April). A memorable performance, also she was great in the original Lolita.
R.I.P Shelley.

"There's got to be a morning after", that song still haunts me.....along with Shelleys "sheepdogs wrestling under a blanket". Shocked
