You are curious about how many 'australians' who came here in the last 15 years know where the dog on the tuckerbox sits. |

That's very unaustralian of you, Pommie Dave.
As a true blue Aussie I can assure you it's nine (9) miles.
I know because I just googled it on the true blue Aussie internet |

Tess, without googling it, I wonder how many of our young Collingwood fans would have known the answer?
I know the culture is disappearing by the language, the clothing, the McDonald's culture that young Aussies have anyway. |

Seriously, though, the lesson of globalisation is that, in order to compete with the third world we need to become the third world. Fortunately we have a government committed to doing just that ... with progressive new industrial relations laws that will soon have us all working in sweatshops for the good of the economy.
Welcome to the 21st century.
You know, you wouldn't be an Aussie
You wouldn't be true yellow

That input matched my default category. Not many people express themselves that way. |

It's not the high cost here Joel, it's that the Chinese will work for nothing as they do not have the same cost of living as our workers do.
What do we do, live in shacks with 20 people so we can compete? |
Same thing really. It costs more to live here, so therefore more costly to produce here, vice versa. |

Actually, open trade involves a country (well forces them to really) be economically efficient, and at the same time forces a country to be involved in industries where they can gain a competitive advantage over other countries. Therefore, industries which aren't compeitive, or sustainable, will often move elsewhere to places that can offer a firm competitive advantages over others in the same area.
It is an unfortunate consequence, and that is why I said the government should put more focus on finding industries, and promoting industries that Australia can realistically compete in.
Free and open trade will NEVER be good for all business sectors, and industries, that is a fact. Anyone who claims otherwise is foolish. However, in the long term, if we operate in industries that are sustainable then it MAY end up good for Ausrtalia. For instance, we do fairly well agriculturally, however, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to manufacture computer chips here - because there are places in the world that simply do it better, cheaper, and have greater knowledge in the area.
I'm crapping on now, but do you see my point?
It is a sad day, but we have to find ways to compete in these sectors (ie. manufacturing) that are moving/closing, or understand that they aren't sustainable in Australia. |
