Fortune shines on INXS
Cameron Adams, music reporter
22sep05
AUSTRALIAN rock band INXS claim their new singer has been approved by Michael Hutchence.
Canadian JD Fortune -- a former Elvis impersonator who was so broke he slept in his car -- was chosen to replace the late Hutchence on yesterday's finale of reality TV show Rock Star.
INXS guitarist Tim Farriss said a surprise thunderstorm in LA yesterday -- the day they had to choose their new singer -- was a sign from Hutchence; it had not rained the entire time they had been in Hollywood to film Rock Star.
"This is one of the most significant days of this band's career," Tim Farriss said yesterday.
"This morning we woke up to thunder. The last time this band made a significant . . . anything was our dear and beloved brother Michael Hutchence's funeral.
"When we walked out of that cathedral carrying his coffin thunder and rain happened.
"And it happened again this morning."
Drummer Jon Farriss said: "We think he let us know (he approved through the thunder)."
Whether Hutchence used his beyond-the-grave influence over the weather to comment on previous replacements Jon Stevens and Terence Trent D'Arby is unclear.
"He's not trying to fill Michael's shoes," Tim Farriss said of Fortune.
"We never expected him to and here we are with a brand new person that completes our band."
Fortune, 32, was the most vocal INXS fan in the program and beat favourite, Sydney's Mig Ayesa and American Marty Casey.
"Michael's light will always be a part of this band," Fortune said.
"There are talented artists here (in INXS) who just aren't finished their journey. I'm happy to be a part of that.
"A huge chunk of who I am as a singer and a songwriter comes from the influences of INXS.
"To be able to say 'We are INXS' is more than a dream, it's the end of a circle."
INXS' first single with Fortune, Pretty Vegas, will be released to radio stations today.
The song was written by Andrew Farriss and Fortune and was played during the TV show.
A new INXS album, Switch, is due for release on November 27 through a million-dollar new contract with Sony BMG.
The band began recording the record in LA this week.
The band performed a new track, Easy Easy, on the show's finale.
INXS, with Fortune, will tour Australia next year.
Survivor founder Mark Burnett, who created Rock Star, will bring the music series back next year.
He will now look for another band who need a lead singer.
